Historical background: Wenchuan earthquake is the most influential earthquake in People's Republic of China (PRC) since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Its magnitude is the third largest earthquake after 1 August, 950, the Medog earthquake in Tibet (M8.5) and the Kunlun Mountain earthquake (M8.1), and the direct hardest hit area reaches1.

Cause of the earthquake: The Indian plate subducted into the Asian plate, which led to the rapid uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the earthquake. The plateau material slowly flows eastward and squeezes eastward along the Longmenshan structural belt on the eastern edge of the plateau, encountering the tenacious resistance of the rigid block under the Sichuan basin, resulting in the long-term accumulation of tectonic stress energy, and finally suddenly released in Beichuan-Yingxiu area of Longmenshan.

Earthquake types: Wenchuan earthquake is thrust, dextral and compressional fault earthquake.

Scope of influence: The earthquake affected most of China and many Asian countries. The earthquake was felt as far north as Beijing, east to Shanghai, south to Hongkong, Thailand, Taiwan Province and Viet Nam, and west to Pakistan.

Losses and casualties: As of May 25, 2009 10, * * * had 69,227 people killed (actually, it should be more than 80,000 people), 374,643 people were injured and17,923 people were missing.
