Chengde, formerly known as Rehe, has a long history and rich multi-ethnic historical and cultural connotations. . According to research, there are traces of human activities here as early as the Neolithic Age. It was called "Tifang" in the Shang Dynasty, and it was a territory of the ancient Yan State in the Western Zhou Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period.
After Qin unified China, it came under the jurisdiction of Yuyang County and Youbeiping County. During the Eastern and Western Han Dynasties, it was first under the jurisdiction of Wuhuan and then the Xianbei people. During this period, ethnic minorities such as the Xiongnu, Xianbei, and Khitan lived here as nomads. During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, it was a place where Wuhuan and Xianbei ethnic groups lived together. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the Jurchen, Mongolian and Han ethnic groups lived here together.
During the Liao and Jin Dynasties in the 13th century AD, Chengde was the center of activities for the Khitan, Jurchen, Mongolian and other ethnic groups. In the Liao Dynasty, it was the territory of Zezhou and Bei'an Prefecture in Dading Prefecture, Zhongjing Road. In the Jin Dynasty, it was called Xingzhou, Beijing Road. After the unification of the Mongolian Empire and the Yuan Dynasty, it was changed to Shangdu Lu'an Prefecture in Zhongshu Province and then to Bei'an Prefecture (the territory is located in today's Longhua County).
At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it belonged to the Peking Prefecture of the capital, and later it belonged to the Xingzhou Wei of the Daning Capital Division. It was not until 1703 of the Kangxi Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty that the Qing court built a summer resort (i.e. Rehe Palace) here. In the first year of Yongzheng (1723), the Rehe Hall was established. In the eleventh year (1733), it took the meaning of "inheriting the grace of ancestors" and changed its name. For Chengzhou. This is the origin of the name "Chengde".
Chengde gradually became the palace or accompanying capital of the Qing Dynasty starting from the Kangxi Dynasty. In the seventh year of Qianlong's reign (1742), the Rehe Hall was reestablished, and in the forty-third year (1778), it was reestablished as the Chengde Mansion. In the fifteenth year of Jiaqing (1810), the Rehe Metropolitan Administration was established, and its administrative offices were all in Chengde. After the Revolution of 1911, the government system was abolished and the Rehe Special Zone was established. In 1928, it was reorganized into Rehe Province, with jurisdiction over Chengde, Chifeng, and Chaoyang. The provincial capital is Chengde.
In 1933, the Japanese army invaded and occupied the entire territory of Rehe, and Rehe Province was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ninth War Zone of the Puppetry of Manchukuo. The Japanese army surrendered in August 1945, and Rehe belonged to the Jicha Reliao Liberated Area. In August 1946, the *** army occupied Chengde. In November 1948, the Chinese People's Communist Party took over Chengde and it remained the capital of Rehe Province.
In December 1955, the 55th meeting of the Government Affairs Council decided to abolish Rehe Province and place Chaoyang, formerly under the jurisdiction of Rehe Province, under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province, Chifeng under the jurisdiction of Inner Mongolia, and Chengde City under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province.
