Last year, Mr. Zhao, who was on a business trip from Beijing to Chengdu, sued the hotel for compensation after being bitten by a bug. Recently, the Chengdu High-tech Zone Court made a judgment. Mr. Zhao was awarded more than 2,000 yuan because the hotel failed to fulfill its security obligations within a reasonable range.

In June last year, Mr. Zhao came to Chengdu from Beijing on business and stayed in a hotel. That night, when he was lying in bed, he vaguely felt bitten, got up and checked, and found several bugs on the bed. So, Mr. Zhao immediately negotiated with the person in charge of the hotel, proposed to go to the hospital for examination and asked the hotel to send the worm for testing to determine whether it was infected with the virus. After the negotiation between the two sides failed, he reported the case to the police. Unable to reach an agreement with the hotel, Mr. Zhao filed a lawsuit with the High-tech Zone Court on the grounds that his right to health was damaged, demanding that the hotel compensate for medical expenses, transportation and accommodation expenses, lost time * * * 240 18.74 yuan and mental damage compensation 5000 yuan. The court held that the hotel, as a provider of accommodation services, should fulfill the obligation of security within a reasonable range for Mr. Zhao, but the accommodation services it provided caused Mr. Zhao to be bitten by unknown insects and caused damage during his stay, and the hotel should be liable for compensation. Finally, the court ruled that the hotel compensated Mr. Zhao for some medical expenses and lost time, totaling 2374.74 yuan.

According to the new consumer law officially implemented today, if a business operator provides goods or services that cause personal injury to consumers or other victims, it shall compensate the reasonable expenses for treatment and rehabilitation such as medical expenses, nursing expenses and transportation expenses, as well as the income reduced due to missed work.
