Shangqing Temple is one of the indispensable transportation hubs in Yuzhong District of Chongqing. It is difficult to calculate the daily passenger flow from here. Today's prosperity and noise have gradually buried the past history, and few people describe its origin.

Before Jiajing in Ming Dynasty, there were fields, graves and hills near Shangqing Temple, which were sparsely populated. Until Jiajing period 1522~ 1566, a squire in this area built the "Sanqing Temple" on the site of today's Tiantan New Village and Stomatological Hospital, covering an area of more than 400 square abbots. The temple has magnificent buildings, including Sanqing Hall, Zushi Hall, Jade Emperor Hall, Lingguan Hall, Leizu Hall, God of Wealth Temple and many other halls.

For a long time, the temple was filled with incense, and many good men and women came to worship. Because they were located on the Jialing River, many businessmen began to sell daily necessities such as lime, firewood and livestock here, and gradually formed a trading place, which became increasingly prosperous. Later, "Sanqing Temple" was renamed as "Shangqing Temple", and people began to use the title of "Shangqing Temple" to refer to this area, so "Shangqing Temple" gradually became a general term in this area, which is still in use today.

1924, Xiong Kewu, the governor of Sichuan, led his troops to leave Sichuan, which triggered a scuffle among warlords in Sichuan. In the same year, Liu Xiang, a Sichuan army, drove away Yuan Zuming, a Guizhou army, and occupied the area around Shangqing Temple. The next year, Yuan Zuming's troops made a comeback and wanted to reoccupy this area, so there was an inevitable large-scale conflict with Liu Xiang in this area, and most of the Buddha statues in Shangqing Temple were also destroyed in this melee. From then on, the once prosperous Shangqing Temple began to decline.

During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, the Qing Temple Branch of the Kuomintang government police also redecorated the temple as a public place, and even after liberation, the post office regarded it as the second canteen. However, with the arrival of the ten-year catastrophe, the nationwide "Down with Ghosts and Ghosts" campaign began to demolish all ancient buildings crazily, and this temple was doomed. Until now, there is only an empty name left in Shangqing Temple.
