The history of Tin Shui Wai
Tin Shui Wai was originally a walled village in Yuen Long. The surrounding area was formerly a large fish pond (Gai Wai) like Nan Sang Wai. In the late 1970s, Tin Shui Wai Development Co., Ltd., headed by Cheung Kong Holdings, acquired land assets in Tin Shui Wai and planned to develop Tin Shui Wai in the form of a new town. In 1982 the company reached an agreement with the Hong Kong government. The government announced that it would acquire all the land in Tin Shui Wai and would instead develop the Tin Shui Wai new town. In the late 1980s, the government launched the development of a new town in Tin Shui Wai. The surrounding fish ponds were filled in and developed into a new residential town. In 1992, the first public housing estate in Tin Shui Wai, Tin Yiu Estate, was completed, and Tin Shui Estate was completed in 1993. Between 1992 and 1998, various phases of Kingswood Villas developed by Cheung Kong Holdings were occupied. In the early days, the area around Lok Wu Court and Tin Yiu Estate was the central area of ??Tin Shui Wai. With the opening of Kingswood Ginza and Kingswood Harbor Plaza Hotel in 1999, Tin Shui Wai Park and the area around Kingswood Ginza became the new town center. In the same year, the Tai Lam Tunnel was officially opened to traffic, and residents of Tin Shui Wai no longer needed to rely on the Tuen Mun Highway to travel to the city. The development of the southern part of Tin Shui Wai is largely completed and it has now become a very prosperous community.
The development of Tin Shui Wai North started in 1998. Due to the Tung Chee Hwa government's policy of building 85,000 units every year, the height and density of public housing in the north of Tin Shui Wai are higher than in the south. Tin Chung Court and Tin Wah Estate were established in 1999. The following few years were the peak period for housing occupancy in Pak Uk Estate, Tin Shui Wai. The population has increased sharply. In 2001, the population in the area reached 270,000.
The extension of the Kowloon-Guangzhou West Rail Link and the Kowloon-Guangzhou Light Rail Link was opened to traffic in 2003. External traffic in Tin Shui Wai has been greatly improved. In 2006, the Hong Kong Wetland Park, located northeast of Tin Shui Wai New Town, was officially opened, adding a new tourist attraction to the area.
