The strange people and strange things in Yangshuo
It was already late autumn when I arrived in Yangshuo, and I chose a hotel far away from the street - Gurong Villa. The name sounds good, it feels like a manor in medieval Europe, which is very desirable.
The next morning I got up early and couldn't wait to walk out of the hotel, only to find that there was no ancient banyan tree here. I was surprised to see a river in front of the hotel.
I walked over quickly and found that the river was extremely clear, and there was mist on the river. Coupled with the green water plants and the fresh forest-like air, it was like being in Penglai Wonderland, as if in a dream. Yangshuo is indeed a great place. No wonder everyone says this is the back garden of Shenzhen.
When I arrived in Yangshuo, I had to visit West Street. After breakfast, I hurried to West Street.
Although it is already late autumn, West Street is still crowded with tourists, many of whom are blond and blue-eyed foreigners. Entering West Street, it seems like you have entered another world. The floor is made of square stone slabs, and on both sides are some retro-looking shops, hotels, bars, restaurants or cafes.
West Street is more lively during the day. The shops on both sides of West Street sell more unique things. Many of them are costumes with ethnic characteristics and imitations of antiques, with special shapes and lifelike images. Let people love you without hesitation.
Some folk artists from all over the country also showed off some of their skills on West Street, including flute players and cucurbit flute players. I saw them wearing Western cowboy hats, buttoned retro clothes, and hanging musical instruments on their waists. They were playing while walking. They stopped when they encountered someone who was interested, and bargained with foreign tourists in broken English.
If they sell musical instruments, they will seriously teach tourists how to play, one demonstration, and the other will follow suit. If the customer learns well, they will nod happily: "yes yes yes." They couldn't play it well, so they shook their heads anxiously like a rattle and kept saying: "no no no." They couldn't wait to put their mouths on each other.
In addition to the flute player, there was also a fortune teller. Among them was an old man with white hair and a boyish face. His white hair was uniquely tied with a hairpin on his head. He could not tell how old he was, but his complexion was very rosy and fair. Wearing a black buckle suit and a pair of black cloth shoes, he looked very special, like a Taoist priest who had just come down from Mount Wutai, with an air of immortality about him. I don’t know if his calculation is accurate, but this outfit has successfully attracted people’s attention.
West Street is even more special at night. When the weather is nice, the bosses will set up tables and chairs in front of their stores, and some even light candles to create a romantic and harmonious atmosphere.
Many foreign tourists sit there and order a cup of coffee or a cup of Blood Red Mary, drinking and chatting with friends. The exotic atmosphere is quite strong, as if they are in a small town in Europe.
At this time, I found a blond male tourist sitting on a chair drinking coffee alone. I saw that this was a rare opportunity and it was time to practice my speaking, so I boldly went up to say hello.
After talking, it turned out that the young man was from France and worked as a hotel waiter in France. He told me that he likes traveling very much. He only works for half a year every year and then spends half a year traveling. He has been to many countries, which makes me envious.
Walking around West Street every day, I met many foreign tourists. Among them, John from the United States is a retired U.S. Navy soldier. John, who is in his sixties, looks older than his actual age. He has long white hair tied back and his tall, fat figure looks awkward.
The reason I noticed John at first was because he was dressed in a particularly unusual way: He wore a green military cap with a red five-pointed star on his head with a white ponytail, and he wore a Wearing a military green coat and a pair of American soldier boots, he looked nondescript. Whenever John walks on West Street, he often attracts people to stop and watch, becoming a unique scenery of West Street.
John traveled to China alone, and he seemed quite lonely. Two other boys, Jack, and the girl Lucy, who came to West Street to learn English, and I often chatted with him.
The three of us ate with John from one restaurant to another on West Street every day, chatting while eating. John's American English has a strong local accent and slang, and sometimes he can't understand it at all, but we are still very happy to have the opportunity to practice spoken English.
After finishing the meal, we quickly had to dig into our pockets. John quickly stretched out a big hand to block us, and fumbled with his other hand from the innermost pocket to take out a wallet with a long string tied to it.
He opened his wallet and showed off to us a row of neat hundred-dollar bills and said: "I am a poor person in the United States, but in China I am a rich person." We. I stopped fighting with him to satisfy his overwhelming sense of superiority.
On West Street, I also met Johnson from Canada. Johnson is definitely a sight to behold on West Street. He is in his forties, with a lean build and a long braid on his slender head that hangs down to his hips.
He is a teacher at a foreign language school on West Street. When he has nothing to do, he often carries a guitar he calls "baby" to some hotels on West Street to eat and sing. He plays and sings the songs he writes himself, quite like a singer.
I was in a very good mood every day and laughed at every turn. Johnson always asked me why I was so happy. I said: As long as there is food for the next meal, I will be happy.
Although Johnson is not young, he is sometimes very funny and often does things that make people laugh or cry. One night, I went back to the hotel and met him on the road. We happened to be walking along the way.
While walking, he suddenly squatted down in front of me. I still didn’t understand what was going on, but he pulled me onto his shoulders and ran away. I was so angry and anxious all of a sudden that I shouted to him to stop and put me down. Pedestrians on the road kept looking sideways, thinking we were a pair of lovers having a fight.
I stayed in Yangshuo for a long time. I walked through the ancient West Street every day, drank tea and chatted with tourists from all over the world, and found that I was a little reluctant to leave.
I am not the only one who feels this way. A German tourist also spends a long time in Yangshuo West Street, and we often meet there.
One day we met again on the streets of Yangshuo. While chatting, he asked me: "Are you a local?"
"Yes." I really wish I was from Yangshuo.
"Then you are so lucky. This is such a good place!" He said enviously.
Yes, West Street is such an unforgettable place. Many foreign tourists don’t want to leave after staying.
There are two French restaurants on West Street, opened by two Frenchmen, and their lovers are both local women from Yangshuo. Like the locals in Yangshuo, they love this paradise so much that they have deeply rooted their roots in this land, so thoroughly and so willingly!
