Customs in Ningxiang County

The folk literature and art centered on Dachengqiao market town is rich and colorful. Rural scholars and some flexible people who are good at reciting rhymes without advanced culture have fabricated many beautiful songs such as Praise for the Lion, Praise for the Land and Praise for the Bride.

Unique "drum play"

It is composed of old artists such as Ou Ersheng, Zhang Fangzhi, Ou Guiqian, Ou Sports Lottery and Ou Gu. There are more than 200' drama characters' accents and corresponding musical instruments, the drummer is responsible for drumming, and others sing the whole drama with musical instruments according to the characters' lives and ugly division of labor accents, so it is called' drumming around'. 1956, ningxiang organized a folk art performance, and Dachengqiao's "Drum Play" won two first prizes for its great strength and wide range of performances (more than 200 songs in xiang opera, with repertoire on demand).

Guanyin temple drama

There are eight books of Guanyin Opera for seven days every year. In order to take care of the business of street houses during the day, there is an extra performance in the morning and evening of Lent (that is, on a certain day, shops don't kill pigs and sheep, and all temple fair personnel and devout believers are vegetarians on Lent day). Some local gentlemen and entertainment lovers advocate irregular performances in spring and autumn. There are also strict rules for the audience, and there is also a room under the stage for women to watch. Men are not allowed in, and offenders will be fined for singing opera.

Huaguqu

Ningxiang ancient painting opera is a folk opera created by working people. Formed in the Qing Dynasty, it is popular in central Hunan, eastern Hunan and Dongting Lake. It is a local opera with unique artistic style, deep mass base, bright local color and rich life flavor. With the creative practice of ancient painting and opera artists, many schools have gradually formed, including Liuyang, Ningxiang, Yiyang, Xihu and Liling. Because Ningxiang dialect is a unified stage language, these five dramas are usually called Ningxiang ancient painting dramas.
