The Huang Family Garden was known as the "No. 1 Villa in China" among the thousands of villas in Gulangyu at that time. It is full of unique charm and legend.
More than a hundred years ago, young Huang Yizhu hid the 36 silver coins his father had sold his ancestral land in exchange for, along with his hairdressing tools, walked more than a hundred miles to Xiamen, and boarded a wooden sailing boat to set foot in Singapore. . From choosing a hairdresser to shaving people's heads, to working across multiple industries such as commerce, banking, insurance, real estate, planting, etc., there are many hardships to go through. After making a fortune in the sugar industry in Indonesia, Huang Yizhu returned to China and settled on Gulangyu Island in 1919. He brought back more than 2.88 million U.S. dollars (equivalent to more than 40 million yuan in silver coins), bought a house and land on Gulangyu Island, and built more than 160 villas of various sizes. It ranks first in Xiamen. In addition, he also invested in railways, mined minerals, and was the founder of Xiamen's tap water and telephone industries. Following his mother's instructions, he donated money to build primary schools, middle schools, universities, and hospitals in Xiamen and Gulangyu. He also donated to Fudan University, Jinan University, Peking University, Nankai University, and Lingnan University in Shanghai. Huang Yi died in Shanghai in 1945 at the age of 78.
The Huang Family Garden is the most eye-catching one of the villas built by Huang Yizhu, and it is also the most valuable old building in Gulangyu. The residence of "Writer" (deputy manager) was originally named "Zhongdeji". After Huang Yizhu returned to China, he decided to settle in Gulangyu Island, so he bought this "second-hand" villa from the original owner and lived there first. Later, Huang Yi lived in the "Ersha" villa and built two villas symmetrically on both sides of the villa, called the "North and South Buildings" to accommodate the family. In 1921, Huang Yizhu demolished the "Second Building" villa and built the "Middle Building" that people see today. The "middle building" was built by Shanghai Yutai Company. It was carefully designed by Chinese and foreign designers, focusing on European style and using exquisite materials. The architectural form is a four-sided corridor, with two-way steps in the front and a wide curved corridor in the back. You can overlook Sunlight Rock in the distance. You can also entertain guests here. In the mezzanine, there are exquisitely carved archaeological shelves, bronze carved fireplaces, corridor columns carefully crafted by famous craftsmen, and long velvet curtains hanging on the cloister curtains. No activity can be seen outside the curtains, but the scenery outside the curtains can be seen through the curtains. The two-way steps, gallery paving, stairs and handrails of the villa are all made of Italian marble. The craftsmanship is exquisite and can be seen today. It is said that the marble alone cost 200,000 silver. The hall is made of nanmu for the entire parapet, ceiling and floor, which is thick and stable. It is decorated with hanging mirrors and oil paintings, as well as red sandalwood antique shelves and a long altar table to display antiques from past dynasties. There is a fireplace and billiards room on the right side of the hall, and the lighting and decoration on the second floor achieve the harmonious unity of Chinese tradition and Western art that the owner loves. The platform and railings outside the sill are also completely different from other villas on Gulangyu Island. Everywhere shows the classical beauty of combining Chinese and Western styles, and it was known as "No. 1 in China" at the time.
The three villas are decorated with many hanging mirrors. There are three barber tools on the ends of the mirrors: a razor, a beard brush and an earphone, as a reminder that future generations will not Don't forget the hardships of their ancestors' entrepreneurship. There is also a "Family History Museum" on the second floor of the mezzanine. As a place of worship for educating children and grandchildren, it is well-intentioned!
Due to the luxury of the villa, during the 1920s and 1930s, while Huang Yizhu was still alive, being invited to visit or be a guest at the Huang Family Garden was a blessing for the dignitaries at that time. Wang Jingwei and Cai Tingkai were both Visit Huang Family Garden. Chiang Kai-shek's attachment to Gulangyu Island has a deep origin. When they were defeated in Taiwan, they went to the island to stay overnight in Huangjia Garden. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Deng Xiaoping and Wang Zhen stayed at Huangjia Garden when they visited Xiamen. Foreign dignitaries such as Lee Kuan Yew and Nixon also stayed and visited here. Movies such as "Gunshots of the Security Bureau", "Spring and Autumn in a Small Town", "The Legendary Lady", etc. have all been shot in the Huang Family Garden.
Huang Family Garden is the best-preserved and most successfully restored old building I have seen on Gulangyu Island. Combining Chinese and Western styles, it has the style of a European villa, the luxurious decoration of aristocrats, and traditional Chinese characteristics. Solemn and elegant, extraordinary style.
The large camphor tree branches in the courtyard are lush and leafy. In front of the villa is a grassy football field, and in the back is the Aberdeen Houhai Bathing Beach. Such a perfect environment is unique among Gulangyu villas. You can feel this from the photos I took. There is nothing I can do about the inside of the building. I can only rely on other people's descriptions. I believe it must be wonderful!
The real value of Huangjia Garden is far more than that. Its legendary history is full of charm. Among the many old villas on Gulangyu Island The most representative among them is a history of entrepreneurship of a generation of overseas Chinese businessmen in the 20th century, showing their life style and heroic spirit of traveling overseas. It should be ranked first among the "Top Ten Villas".
Today's Huangjia Garden is not complete. The south building is the Zhongdeji Resort Hotel, the 4th building is the Wujiayuan Hotel, the north building and the middle building are the Gulangyu Hotel. My personal opinion is: Such a building is the oldest in Gulangyu. Villa, classic architecture, beautiful environment. As a "trump card" for World Heritage application, it should not be a hotel, but should restore its original appearance: Huang Yi lived in the former residence and opened it as the "Gulangyu Historical Style and Architecture Museum" to truly Show all his style and unique charm
