Harbin Saint Sophia Church
In 1903 AD, with the completion and opening of the Middle East Railway, the Fourth Infantry Division of Tsarist Russia’s Eastern Siberia also invaded Harbin. In order to stabilize the morale of the soldiers who were far away from home, Tsarist Russia broke ground to build the Hagia Sophia in 1907. A church with an all-wood structure was completed that year and served as the chapel for the infantry division. On September 27, 1923, the second foundation laying ceremony for the reconstruction of Hagia Sophia was held. After nine years of meticulous construction, a magnificent, elegant and extraordinary architectural masterpiece was completed.
Hagia Sophia is magnificent and exquisite. The walls of the church are all made of clear red bricks, with a huge and full onion dome on top, commanding the tent roofs of different sizes on the four wings, forming a master-slave layout. There are stairs connecting the four floors, and there are four floors on the front, back, left and right. One door in and out. The top of the main entrance is the bell tower. The seven copper bells have exactly seven notes. The well-trained bell ringers use their hands and feet to strike the melodious bells.
The majestic Saint Sophia Church constitutes Harbin’s unique and exotic cultural landscape and urban customs. At the same time, it is a historical witness of Tsarist Russia’s invasion of Northeast China and an important relic for studying the modern history of Harbin.
