Teach you how to get around Mauritius in three days
Introduction: There are many islands in the world, which look like postcards. They can be summed up completely in McDull’s words: blue sky and white clouds, coconut palm trees, clear water and white sand. The beauty is very flat and lacks three-dimensionality. And Mauritius is more like a full story. It is an isolated island whose destiny was changed by colonization, an Eden where humans and animals live in harmony, and a tropical paradise that countless people must visit. Although you won’t get tired of playing here for a month, according to our habits, Hazelnut will take you three days to show you around Mauritius. Teach you how to spend three days in Mauritius? Day 1
10:00 AM Blue Penny Museum
On the first day, we set off from the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis. Museums are the bane of hazelnuts, so to understand the history and society of furballs, the Blue Penny Museum was chosen as the first stop. The treasures in the museum are two of the rarest stamps in the world, the red one penny and the blue two penny issued in 1847. Although controversial, these two tiny stamps are considered by many to be the most valuable items on the entire island of Mauritius.
Of course, the Blue Penny Museum is not just about stamps. This two-story building tells visitors the colonial history of Mauritius from multiple angles. One of the most interesting is to see the island through the development of its postal system. There are also many precious maps on the first floor, telling how this isolated island in the Indian Ocean was discovered.
Paul and Virginia is a novel published in 1788 and seems to be the most famous literature about Mauritius. The story tells the story of two children who are engaged and grew up together on the island of Mauritius as childhood sweethearts. However, due to family reasons, Virginia returned to France for education. Because she was dissatisfied with the marriage arranged by her aunt, she took a boat back to Maoqiu. As a result, the ship's hull was hit by a hurricane when it entered the port. Virginia fell into the water and wanted to retain her dignity. He refused to take off his heavy clothes and skirts, and eventually drowned. The Blue Penny Museum houses a statue telling the story. Hazelnut just briefly read the synopsis of the story. Those who are interested may wish to sit on the beach and read the book slowly.
12:00 PM Central Market
After seeing the museum, the image of Mauritius as a country immediately became vivid. Walking along the small street behind the museum, what you immediately see are colorful paper umbrellas floating in the air.
This is a small shopping area in Port Louis. There is a local handicraft market and the shopping environment is good. You can buy all the souvenirs for others or for yourself in one stop: refrigerator magnets, postcards, and souvenirs. Don’t forget to bargain for local specialty glass products, spices and famous rum.
A plump bird can be seen on many souvenirs from Mauritius. Its name is the dodo, and it is a native species of Mauritius. Perhaps due to the lack of natural predators and abundant food, this bird cannot fly and its body movements are clumsy. Clumsy and delicious combined, it's a deadly combination, if you ask me. The earliest record of the dodo appeared in 1598. In less than half a century, the bird was hunted and eaten by Dutch sailors and became extinct. The dodo is now not only a symbol of Mauritius, but also a symbol of extinct animals around the world.
On the way from the handicraft market to the central market, you will pass by the most beautiful street in Port Louis, the Place de Armas. The road, lined with palm trees, leads to the local government buildings and is basically a hairy Champs Elysées.
When traveling anywhere, the local market is a stop you cannot miss. The central market in Port Louis is much more orderly and clean than I imagined. It is bustling with people and lined with shops. It has been the center of the local economy and life since the end of the 19th century, and it is still a good place to bargain with the locals. I personally think that the best part is the fruit and vegetable section. The meat market opposite is daunting.
12:40 PM Adelaide Fortress
This is a fortress built by the British. It is located on the top of a hill and is full of desolation. It is a good panoramic view of Port Louis. place. But to be honest, I don’t think it’s okay not to go. Both the fortress itself and the city scenery of Port Louis are lackluster.
1:00 PM Chateau de Labourdonnais
After searching around, there is no Chinese translation, but this manor, built in 1859, is Hazelnut’s favorite place on the island. one. The main building is a very distinctive colonial-style building, surrounded by a large garden, dozens of mango trees, melons and guava, and a small winery.
There is a great restaurant in the manor, which offers both Western and local dishes. The cuisine uses many ingredients from the manor. Hazelnut had lunch here. At that time, a wedding tent was set up in the garden, which was also a great wedding venue.
2:00 PM Botanical Garden
A long and awkward name, Sir Hiusagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. The Sir was the first Prime Minister of Mauritius. This is the oldest botanical garden in the entire southern hemisphere, founded in 1770. Because of its huge area, even though it is one of the most popular tourist attractions, it still feels very quiet when walking inside. Among the towering ancient trees, you will occasionally encounter ancient ruins. Tourists like me who are in a hurry will unconsciously slow down. This experience is what other islands lack and is a unique advantage of Mauritius.
The most famous thing in the garden is the huge water lily. It may be due to the season (it is late winter in the southern hemisphere). The water lily blooms sparsely, and the largest and most beautiful blooms only occur in January. The dozens of palm trees in the garden are also a great sight. Those who are interested in botany can ask a local guide at the door to learn more about it.
4:00 PM Sugar Factory
As mentioned before, museums are my weakness. In fact, I stayed in the sugar factory for nearly two hours. However, for those who are not interested in reading every word, this small sugar museum can be fully explored in an hour.
If the Blue Penny Museum observes the history of Mauritius from the perspective of the postal industry, then here it is from the perspective of the sugar industry. To this day, the sugar industry and its related rum industry are still the pillar industries of Maoqiu. This sugar factory, which has been in operation for nearly 200 years, retains most of its machinery. Walking around it, you will also learn about the history of sugar as a spice and the entire sugar-making process.
In the small shop at the exit, you can taste up to 14 kinds of locally made candies for free, and you can also buy some to take home, which is a very special gift. It is worth mentioning that there is a similar rum museum in the south of the island. The King doesn’t drink, so he didn’t go. People who like to drink should not miss it.
6:00 PM Red Church
The small red-roofed Catholic church is located in the small seaside village Cap Malheureux in the north. This place name means: Unlucky Cape , because too many ships have run aground in this rocky bay. It was getting late when I arrived, and the red tiles of the church seemed to melt into the sunset.
The sea behind the church may not be the best navigation route, but the beach covered with black rocks has a special sense of vastness. Perhaps because it was so different from the beach in the tropical paradise I imagined, this bay left a deep impression on me.
There are many local tour groups that organize day trips in Mauritius. If you want to go at your own pace and only go where you want to go, like Hazelnut, you can ask the hotel if they can provide a Car and a driver/guide. This is more expensive and of course more free. In a resort where you don't speak the same language, the hotel's concierge service is your greatest resource. You should make good use of it. If you have any interests or questions, you can discuss them with them. Teach you how to get around Mauritius in three days Day 2
10:00 AM Go to sea
On the second day, you might as well go to sea and enjoy the best sea view of Mauritius on the boat and spend a long day vacation. There are many harbors on the island to depart from, and many shipping companies offer one-day sea tours. Depending on the hotel you stay in or your own interests, you can choose to visit the sea areas in any direction from east to west, north to south. Since Hazel is staying at the Four Seasons Hotel on the east coast, my trip is in the east, and the yacht docks directly at the hotel's dock, which is very convenient.
Everyone knows how much I love boats and the sea. My ultimate dream in life is to have my own boat and sail around the world alone. This dream is still a bit far away, but looking at the waves flying on the bow of the boat on the sea, I really feel that everything I usually care about is meaningless and insignificant.
The first place our boat visited was the Southeast River Falls. This river is the longest river on the island of Mauritius. The waterfall itself is small and not spectacular, but it is full of vitality. The water entering the waterfall is very narrow and cannot be approached by a catamaran. You have to transfer to a speedboat to get closer. You also encountered monkeys on the nearby mountain stream.
Continuing the itinerary, most ships will dock at Ile aux Cerfs, a well-known local island with shallow waters nearby and one of the most praised views on the east coast. To be honest, I personally don’t think Kashima is that beautiful, but the scene captured from the sky by the aerial camera we brought is still very shocking.
Finally, we went to a very beautiful sea area. The water was a mixture of azure and turquoise. Unfortunately, I didn’t ask for the name clearly. At that time, the crew said that this place was called "Blue" (but it was not blue bay). Abandoned lighthouse near Ile aux Fouquets. The king and his wife also briefly snorkeled near where the boat docked.
There are many great hotels to choose from in Mauritius. Hazelnut stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel, and the above is an aerial photo from DJI. It is worth mentioning that this hotel does not have a complete sea view. Most of the rooms face a bay. However, the hotel's service is the best I have ever stayed in. It is much better than the Four Seasons in Europe. There are also many Chinese tourists. If you stay for a few more days, you will naturally meet friends and travel together. In addition, the locals are full of praise for the Prince Hotel in Constance! How to spend three days in Mauritius? Day 3
8:00 AM Watch dolphins and whales
The south and west of the island , there are many companies that take tourists to see dolphins, and if they are lucky, they can jump into the sea and swim with the dolphins. As for observing whales, I asked many people and they said the chance is not high. Due to a fever the day before, Hazelnut canceled the trip. Interested students can go.
10:00 AM Casela Zoo
The zoo is the biggest highlight of this trip to Mauritius. The reason is that you can have close contact with the lions. There are only three places in the world where you can play with them one-on-one. . Especially a few little lions can turn your heart into a little scumbag. (I read a lot of comments on Weibo asking what camera these lion photos were taken with. In fact, the zoo has a designated photographer who follows them, takes the photos and then sells them to everyone. Well, it’s full of tricks)
In fact, the lions, tigers, and leopards in the park were established by a wildlife biologist to help them multiply and release them back into the wild environment. The activity I chose was to play with the little lions. The staff had very strict rules and could only touch their backs. They were not allowed to pick them up or touch their paws. At that time, many of the little lions were still napping and were very well-behaved.
In addition, you can make an appointment in advance to walk with the lions, that is, walk with them, or get up close to the big lions. The king was a little scared so he didn’t choose. The concubine went in alone.
Finally, regarding safety, I read some suggestions before coming here and felt that the activities here were not very safe. The bottom line is, these are still large, aggressive animals. Personal feelings: It is still very safe to have contact with lion cubs. These two-month-old babies were born in such an environment and have trainers playing with them every day. They have become accustomed to it. When in contact with the big lion, it is obvious that it is a little impatient, so everyone needs to master the safety. There are "risk" factors in any adventure.
2:00 PM Seven-Colored Soil
The seven-colored soil in Mauritius has become a tourist attraction in recent years. Hazelnut saw many similar pictures on the Internet and was so beautiful that she cried. Then I vowed to go, but what I actually saw was like this (it still enhanced the color of the photo).
There is only a small piece of seven-color soil. Different colors are formed due to the iron and aluminum elements in the original soil. My biggest feeling at the time was that our high school geography teacher should really like it here.
3:00 PM Black River Gorge National Park
Black River Gorge National Park retains the original rainforest of Mauritius, covering a total area of ??67 square kilometers. The day before leaving Mauritius, Hazelnut did a simple hike here. Mountain views seem to calm me more than lazy beaches. At several important viewing spots, there are also local food carts selling fresh sugar cane juice, which will come with a small piece of sugar cane to bite into, just like you did when you were a child, just be careful not to be snatched away by monkeys.
Mauritius is a stop on the hazelnut dream map, a place that must be visited once in a lifetime. To be honest, is this the most beautiful island I have ever been to? Really not. But one thing is guaranteed, you won’t get bored even if you stay here for a month. This Garden of Eden in the Indian Ocean relies on its colorful society and nature to slowly win your heart.
