1000000 pixel medium format fuji GFX 100 hands-on experience of real machine.
It should be noted that this is an early development model of GFX 100. Although it has many functions, it is still not a complete GFX 100. The whole fuselage surface is covered by the texture of rubber coating, similar to the material used on GFX 50S.
Simply put, GFX 100 is very similar to GFX 50S, with a lighter gray surface and battery handle. The whole fuselage is very huge, which also provides more fuselage space for the fuselage shutter, fuselage anti-shake and other parts, because it must stabilize this 1.7 times Quan Huafu middle frame sensor (43.8mm×32.9mm).
From the appearance of GFX 100 with GF 45mm f/2.8, it feels more like a professional full-frame digital SLR camera than a medium-frame mirrorless cameras. The exact size and final weight are still a secret, but as far as the feeling of using it is concerned, this combination is roughly the same as Nikon D5 or Canon 1DX Mark II.
From the top, GFX 100 is not like the previous GFX 50. It is more clumsy, more industrial in appearance, and lacks a retro-style dial, which are the characteristics of previous GFX and X series cameras.
There is a huge high-contrast shoulder screen at the top, which almost occupies the upper right corner of the camera, while the turntable on the left is used to switch the camera between dynamic images, static images and multiple exposure modes, and the "drive" button in the middle allows you to determine the frame rate you need now.
When getting started, we found that the screen at the top of GFX 100 has not been fully activated, but it can still fully display the main exposure parameters, including exposure compensation.
Compared with the early 1950s, the most popular change of GFX 100 is the electronic viewfinder. Although Fuji requires us to express the exact specifications of the viewfinder in a vague way, I can tell you that it is comparable to the excellent EVF of X-H 1 in terms of clarity and resolution, with no pixelation and obvious lag, especially when starting autofocus.
Like GFX 50S, the viewfinder unit of GFX 100 is detachable and interchangeable with the viewfinder of early cameras. However, GFX 50 users who want to save money may be disappointed. When the viewfinder of GFX 50S is connected to GFX 100, they will not get the carefree experience brought by the resolution and fast refresh rate viewfinder.
From the back of the fuselage, compared with GFX 50S, more differences are obvious. The focus mode dial has been switched from the left to the right of the viewfinder, the playback has been relocated to the lower right of the screen, and the 4-way controller of the old camera has been completely abandoned.
In addition to the larger sensor, there is a brand-new organic light-emitting diode strip display on the back, located below the main LCD display. Unfortunately, this display is not activated in this prototype.
The LCD screen on the back of GFX 100 is not completely flush with the rest of the back, but it is much smaller than the original GFX, partly because the large battery is located under the screen and inside the handle.
Like GFX 50S, the display screen is still a three-axis tilt touch screen, which is good, because in some cases, it may be easier to set the autofocus point by touching, especially when the camera is equipped with a tripod.
Inside the handle is a battery tray in which two identical NP-T 125 batteries are placed. The battery life has yet to be confirmed, but as far as I know, Fuji's goal is roughly the same as the old camera, that is, it can shoot about 400 shots per charge (CIPA standard), so the actual shooting of GFX 100 may reach 800 shots per shot. It is worth mentioning that although two batteries can double the battery life of the camera, GFX 100 only needs one battery to work perfectly.
GFX 100 has two card slots, but surprisingly, they are both SD cards. Although GFX 100 has ultra-high pixels of 1 100 million pixels, Fuji did not install the memory card of XQD/CFexpress on GFX 100.
The output and access ports are as expected, with microphones and headphone jacks, as well as HDMI and USB Type-C. Although it is not confirmed, the lightning symbol on the port door indicates that this machine should be able to charge through USB Type-C.
The core of GFX 100 is a newly developed 1 100 megapixel sensor. In addition to extra pixels, the new sensor also implants phase detection pixels into the whole sensor, and supports internal 4K/30P, 10bit and 4:2:0 video, and outputs 10bit 4:2:2 video through HDMI.
Although the exact details of GFX 100 are still a secret, Shoot found that GFX 100 can still provide a large number of clear photos when shooting with GF 45mm f/2.8 in the hotel conference room, and it can still provide a few acceptable photos when the shutter speed is lower than 1/6 seconds.
What we really want to test is the autofocus performance of GFX 100. We just conducted a simple test in an unscientific hotel conference room. The autofocus speed is very good, which is greatly improved compared with the original GFX 50S. Of course, this is partly due to the new phase detection autofocus system and the powerful onboard processor of higher resolution cameras. In addition, compared with the current shutter of Fuji camera, the shutter button on this prototype GFX 100 has a faster response speed, which is similar to that of Nikon or Canon digital SLR cameras.
Dashicheng is responsible for developing GFX 100. His team still has a lot of work to do, but he believes that this machine will be launched on time in late spring or early summer this year. The price has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to be around $65,438+00,000, equivalent to RMB 68,000.
