Jianghuai, a geographical term, as its name implies, refers to the areas of "Jiang" (Yangtze River) and "Huai River" (Huaihe River). Huainan West Road and Huainan East Road were established in Song Dynasty. In the Yuan Dynasty, Huaibei belonged to Jiangbei Province of Henan Province.

Huainan West Road, established in the Southern Song Dynasty, is located in central Anhui and southern Henan, including Hefei, Anqing, Lu 'an, Huainan, Bengbu and Xinyang. The local dialects are mainly Jianghuai Mandarin and Gan Dialect. Anqing's counties (except Tongcheng) belong to Huai Yue in Gan dialect, and the rest belong to Huai Xi in Hong Chao in Jianghuai Mandarin.

Huainan East Road was established in the Southern Song Dynasty and located in the middle of Jiangsu, including Yangzhou, Taizhou, Nantong, Huai 'an, Yancheng and Lianyungang. Dialects in this area are divided into Jianghuai Mandarin, Zhongyuan Mandarin and Wu dialect, among which Qidong, Haimen and Jingjiang are Wu dialects, and the northern counties of Lianyungang are Zhongyuan Mandarin, and the rest belong to Hong Chao and Tairu dialects of Jianghuai Mandarin. Yangzhou, Huai 'an and Yancheng belong to Huaiyang, Lianyungang belongs to Hayes, and Taizhou and Nantong belong to Tairu.
