History of Dhaka International Airport

194 1 During World War II, the British government built a runway in Kurmitola, a few kilometers away from Tejgaon, as an additional runway at Tejgaon Airport. Tejgaon airport was a military airport at that time, taking off and landing fighters flying to Assam and Myanmar war zones.

1947 After the founding of Pakistan, Tejgaon Airport became the first domestic airport in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). After Bangladesh's independence, in order to cope with the increasing aviation demand, Bangladesh built a new airport on the basis of Crewe Mitola runway. 198 1 year, then President Abdel-Sater officially announced the opening of the airport and named it Zia International Airport to commemorate the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman.

1992 the airport terminal was rapidly expanded with new covered bridges and equipment. A parking lot for 500 cars was built at the same time.

In 20 10, the Bangladeshi government renamed the airport Shah Djarrar International Airport to commemorate the most respected Sufi saint Shah Djarrar in Bangladesh.
