The beautiful lake Taupo was once a huge fiery volcano. The most recent eruption was in 181 AD, and the energy of the eruption was huge enough to change the entire sky from Europe to China. According to Maori legend, this lake is the center of fish activity on Maui (New Zealand's northern peninsula). The countryside around Lake Taupo offers great opportunities for rainbow trout fishing, skiing on Mount Ruapehu and exploring the local geothermal phenomenon. Popular Taupo experiences include Huka Falls, geothermal walks, prawn farms, lake cruising and kayaking expeditions to see the rocky reefs below Main Harbor.
