Table manners: the correct direction of placing chopsticks when eating

Etiquette not only shows a person's etiquette image, but also reflects family education and all aspects of upbringing. Not much difference can be reflected when talking, but many problems can be revealed inadvertently when eating.

Three long and two short means that before or during the meal, chopsticks of uneven lengths are placed on the table. This approach is very unlucky, and we usually call it "three longs and two shorts". It means "death".

When you stop eating temporarily during the feast, you can place your chopsticks directly on the plate or spoon. If you place your chopsticks horizontally on the plate, it means you are drunk and full and will no longer eat. This etiquette of horizontal chopsticks has existed in our country since ancient times. The horizontal chopstick ceremony is generally used between peers or relatively familiar friends. In order to show respect for the elders, the younger ones must wait for the elders to hold their chopsticks horizontally before they can follow suit.

According to historical records, there was a Tang Su in the Song Dynasty who committed the crime of disrespect for holding his chopsticks first when he was dining with the emperor, and was sent to the border. Now when eating, even if you have finished eating first, do not clear away the dishes immediately, but wait until the whole table has finished eating before clearing away together. This can be said to be a continuation of the ancient etiquette of horizontal chopsticks, which means "if a person does not accompany you, he will accompany you with chopsticks."

When eating, chopsticks should be placed next to the bowl or on the chopstick holder, not on the bowl. In daily life, people also have the following taboos on the etiquette of using chopsticks:

1. Avoid knocking chopsticks. That is to say, when waiting for a meal, you cannot sit at the table, take a chopstick with one hand and hit it randomly, or use chopsticks to hit a bowl or tea cup.

2. Avoid throwing chopsticks. When handing out chopsticks before a meal, you should straighten out the chopsticks in pairs, and then gently place them in front of everyone's table. If you are far away, you can ask someone to pass them over, and you can't just throw them on the table.

3. Avoid using forked chopsticks. The chopsticks cannot be placed crosswise, one horizontally and one vertically, or one with a big end and the other with a small end. Chopsticks should be placed next to the bowl, not on the bowl.

4. Avoid inserting chopsticks. When you need to leave temporarily during a meal, you should place your chopsticks gently on the table or beside the plate, and do not insert them into the rice bowl.

5. Avoid waving chopsticks. When picking up dishes, you should not wave your chopsticks around on the plate or flip them up and down. When you encounter others coming to pick up dishes, you should intentionally avoid them and beware of "chopstick fights".

6. Avoid dancing with chopsticks. When talking, do not use chopsticks as knives and dance around the table; do not poke chopsticks in front of others when asking others to eat. Doing so is rude.
