The ruins of an ancient city in the desert of Zhangye, Gansu Province, once the capital of a country, have almost no tourists.

In Gaotai County, Zhangye, Gansu Province, there is an ancient city ruins in a desert. However, this ancient city is not famous today. Not many people know its name, and almost no one comes to visit. Only the remaining walls of this ancient city remain, and the scale of the city can be vaguely seen. Now the name of this ancient city is Camel City.

In fact, Camel City is not a tourist attraction. It has not been developed and the surrounding area is very desolate. However, there is a village next to Camel City, which makes the ruins of this ancient city somewhat lively. But more than a thousand years ago, Camel City was very prosperous and extremely important. It was even the capital of a country.

After the fall of the Western Jin Dynasty, the Central Plains Dynasty entered the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and several separatist regimes were formed in the northwest region. Camel City was built by Qianliang at that time. In order to resettle the original refugees from the Central Plains, the former Liang regime built Camel City, but it was called "Jiankang City" at the time, named after Jiankang, the capital of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, to win the favor of the refugees from the Central Plains.

Subsequently, the city was owned by the Houliang and Northern Liang regimes. In 397 AD, Duan Ye established Beiliang and made Luotuo City the capital. Since then, Luotuo City has become the capital of Beiliang. Later, the capital of Beiliang was moved to Wuwei City, Gansu Province, so Luotuo City was also called the ancient capital of Beiliang.

Today’s Luotuocheng ruins are 425 meters wide from east to west and 704 meters long from north to south, with a total area of ??about 300,000 square meters. It is the largest and best-preserved ancient cultural site of the Han and Tang Dynasties in China. In addition to the ruins of the ancient city, there are also a large number of tombs in the south of the city.

There is a small city in the southwest corner of the ancient city, commonly known as "Miyagi". Beicheng is commonly known as the "Imperial City". Today you can still clearly see the layout of the ancient city, and the urns and city walls in the outer city are still intact.

From the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, Luotuo City was an important town in the northwest region. In 695 AD of the Tang Dynasty, General Wang Xiaojie established the Jiankang Army here. In the first year of Dali of the Tang Dynasty (AD 766), the Jiankang Army was captured by the Tibetans and was massacred and plundered. It was then abandoned and became a campsite for herdsmen at night. It was used as a natural camel pen, hence the name Camel City.

Although Luotuo City is just a ruin today, its historical value is very important. Many precious cultural relics from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty were unearthed in the ruins, which provides rich and intuitive evidence for the study of ancient Hexi history. It is also a national key cultural relic protection unit.
