Ecological classification: Woody plants; Deciduous shrubs

Ornamental classification: Ornamental flowers

Height Range: 2 (M)

Morphological characteristics: Rose is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub with hook-shaped prickles. There are 3-5 pinnate leaflets, and the flowers are often clustered, slightly fragrant, single-petaled, pink or nearly white. Flowering period is October. Perfume rose (p.×odorata) is a natural hybrid between rose and rose. New shoots and leaves are often bronze in color. The flowers are pink, light yellow, orange, pure white and other colors. They are fragrant and have no malt during the growing season. Modern roses (R. Shrub or vine; leaves are thick, large and shiny; flower buds are mostly oval, with rich flower shapes, double to double petals, and light to strong fragrance. It blooms continuously, and the peak flowering period is from May to June and September to October.

Growth habits: Rose is a thorny shrub, or in the shape of vines and climbers. It likes an environment with sufficient sunshine, air circulation, good drainage and shelter from wind. It needs appropriate shade in midsummer. The optimal temperature for most varieties is 15-26°C during the day and 10-15°C at night. It is relatively cold-resistant and will enter dormancy when the temperature falls below 5℃ in winter. If the high temperature in summer continues to be above 30°C, most varieties will flower less, their quality will be reduced, and they will enter a semi-dormant state. General varieties can withstand low temperatures of -15°C. It requires rich organic matter, fertile, loose and slightly acidic soil, but has a wide adaptability to soil. The relative humidity of the air should be 75-80, but it can also be slightly dry or slightly humid. It has the characteristic of continuous flowering.

Propagation and cultivation: 1. Propagation The vegetative propagation of roses can be divided into cuttings, grafting, divisions, layering, high-altitude layering, tissue culture and other methods. Among them, cutting and grafting are simple and easy to do and are widely used by people. The sowing method is used to develop new varieties and a large number of rootstocks for each propagation. Cuttings are mostly carried out in spring, early summer and early autumn (temperature is above 15oC), and cuttings can be done in the greenhouse in winter. In order to improve the survival rate, some people use circumferential peeling on the plants, and then cut off the branches and make cuttings after callus has grown. When cutting, if you use 500-1000 ppm indole butyric acid or 500 ppm potassium indole acetate saline solution to quickly soak the lower end of the cuttings for 1-30 seconds, it will promote rooting. Full light spray cutting during the growing season has good results. Grafting is the main means of propagating roses. To obtain high-quality grafted seedlings, you must first choose a suitable rootstock. Currently, the commonly used rootstocks in China are: wild rose, pink rose, and white jade.

Branch grafting is often used during the dormant period. Grafting time: December to February of the following year in the south, before leaf buds sprout in spring in the north. For grafting during the growing season, T-shaped, gate-shaped and other bud grafting is often used. If there is a requirement to breed a large number of a specific breed in a short period of time. Tissue culture methods can be used. 2. Cultivation The most important thing in rose cultivation is pruning. In order to maintain the graceful appearance of the tree and concentrate nutrients for flowering, in addition to low-frequency pruning during the general growth period, pruning is also required in winter. Pruning of hybrid perfume rose, full-flower rose, and strong-flower rose: If it is a clump-type cultivated shrub, the plant is required to be tall and bloom more. If the plant is to be pruned high, the plant will be shorter. If the flower is blooming, it should be pruned low. Generally, only 3-5 main branches are left per plant. When pruning high, the main branch should be 75-120 cm, containing 15-20 buds. When pruning low, the main branch should be 30-40 cm, containing 6-8 buds. Pruning of vine roses: Varieties that bloom only once a year will grow new long branches from the roots every year, and some of the side branches will bloom that year. After flowering, all new flowering strips should be cut off. For vine varieties that bloom multiple times, cut off the tops of short flowering branches after flowering, leaving only 2 buds at the base. After 6-7 weeks, these buds can produce new flowering side branches. Pruning of miniature roses: You can prune them according to the method of hybrid perfume roses, but because the small side branches are particularly dense, some need to be thinned out. For roses that are not very cold-resistant, mild frost protection is required in places where the minimum temperature in winter is lower than -15°C. For example, 20 cm of soil should be piled at the base, and the clumps should be wrapped with straw curtains, hemp bags, plastic films, etc. In places below -20oC, it is necessary to dig loose the soil on one side and cover the plant with a cover. Successful experience in greenhouse cut flower cultivation: Use elevated flower beds with a width of 1 meter, plant 4 plants side by side, and keep the room temperature at 15oC at night. Keep the soil fully moist during the first 6 weeks after planting. Start fertilizing when new shoots sprout and grow. In a greenhouse environment, pest and disease control is extremely important, and regular spraying is necessary for prevention. The management of potted roses can be summarized as follows: loose pot soil, appropriate pot diameter, moderate moisture and dryness, frequent application of thin fertilizer, picking flowers and pruning, preventing and controlling diseases and insect pests, often leaving the pot outdoors, loosening the soil, weeding, and stripping the root bud lines and repotting every year.
