The origin of Yugu village

In the 16th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1890), the Zhang family of Siming founded the private garden "Yu Garden" in the northeast of Jing 'an Temple, a thousand-year-old temple. 1899, named Yuyuan Road. It is said that the area around Yongyuan Road used to be full of graves and rivers, which is unlucky in the eyes of China people. However, during the concession period, foreigners felt that this area was suitable for architecture, which subsequently promoted the development of surrounding areas.

The word "foolish valley" comes from Su Shi's "great wisdom is like a fool" and Lao Zi's "open mind is like a valley", which means that a wise man looks stupid on the surface, but his generous mind is as modest as a valley and embraces all rivers.

Designer Yang Runyu

Yang Runyu, 1892, from Shanghai. I study in Pudong Middle School. After a short study, I transferred to Tushanwan Craft School in Xujiahui. But he didn't learn how to build a house here, but painted and worked as a carpenter. Therefore, he is not an architect by training.

19 12 years, Yang Runyu entered Shanghai (British business) Elde Foreign Firm, and then he really started to contact the "construction" business. After working for three years, he started his own business. 19 15 established (Shanghai) Huaxin Surveying and Mapping Company, which was later renamed Huaxin Architects Office. The company's address is on the 5th floor of Mainland Shopping Mall, Nanjing Road, Shanghai.

At the beginning, Yang Runyu's most contacted projects were factory design, including the former Shanghai Defeng Yarn Factory, the former Shanghai Huacheng Tobacco Factory, the former Shanghai Dadong Tobacco Factory, and the former Shanghai Hudong Yangshupu Road Yide Company's China factory. By the end of 1920s, a series of residential projects began to be designed. Among them, Yongquanfang and Yugu Village are the most representative.

The layout of the alley in Yugu Village is like a fishbone, a big alley running through the north and south, with many small alleys on both sides. The main hutong outside the entrance is designed to be quite spacious, and the auxiliary hutong is also designed to be more spacious than the old Shikumen Hutong.
