Words and allusions

The Biography of Chen Fan in the Later Han Dynasty records that in the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a magistrate named Chen Fan, who was honest and attached great importance to talents. At that time, there was a man named Xu Zhi in Nanchang, who was fluent in words. Although his family is poor, he never envies wealth. Because of good moral character, profound knowledge and great reputation, it has been recommended to the government many times at the local level. Nevertheless, Xu Zhi is still content with living in poverty. When the government asked him to take office, he always insisted on resigning. Some locals call him "Nan Zhou Gao Shi". When Chen Fan heard about Xu Zhi, he attached great importance to it and sincerely invited him to meet and listen to his opinions. When Xu Zhilai came, Chen Fan treated each other warmly and specially built a couch for Xu Zhi at home (equivalent to the current bed). As soon as Xu Zhi came, he put down the couch and let Xu Zhi stay and talk all night. As soon as Xu Zhi left, the sofa hung up. In this way, people call this practice in Chen Fan "stay", and later people call it "stay". Mostly used in diplomatic exchanges, only suitable for writing, not suitable for speaking.
