What is your favorite "sleeper" movie and why do you like it?
A successful film is the result of several components coming together. However, some movies appear to have the right formula, but may be missing an ingredient or two.
As a result, they often end up cruising under the radar rather than becoming aerial toast. Of course, popularity doesn't always indicate quality. vice versa.
Here are two recent films that deserve more exposure:
Ready or Not (2019)
The bride’s wedding night is fleeting and it’s Because her eccentric new in-laws force her to participate in a horrific game.
Samara Weaves (not Margot Robbie) announces her arrival on Dressed to Fame's Ready or Not stage, a wickedly funny, self-aware and boring horror comedy.
Take a portion of the knives, and a quarter out of them, blend them with a pinch of Quentin Tarantino-style B-movie sensibilities, and you end up ready or not.
No nuance to be found here. Instead, you're usually treated to outrageous romps led by a charismatic and convincing protagonist. It's bloody fun; quite literally.
The film may lack nuance, but it doesn't aspire to entertainment value. It strikes the perfect balance between excitement and humor. The thin line across.
The radiant weave brings her charisma to the film, at all its clichés. A star is born.
The Bad Times of the Royal Age (2018)
Early 1970s. Four strangers check in at the El Royale hotel. Some of the new guests' raison d'être is far from innocent, while others don't seem to be.
Drew Goddard's Hard Times pays homage to Tarantino's work in many ways, through its well-written characters Reflections on life, death, war, religion, sin and race.
The titular hotel doubles as an allegorical purgatory for these strangers, all of whom have skeletons in their closets.
Goddard is well versed in the art of expectant subversion (Cabin in the Woods), crafting a vivid narrative tapestry and coaxing standout performances from his all-star cast, including but not limited to:
Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson and Chris Hemsworth; play Charles Manson-style characters.
The real stalwarts, however, are Cynthia Erivo and Lewis Pullman (Bill Pullman’s son!), whose character delivery and acting abilities make the The court is dazzled.
El Royale's Bad Times, while flawed in some respects, is thematically rich and metaphorically rich. A film worthy of your consideration, if only for the well etched characters.
