What are the ancient and modern Chinese and foreign experts and research institutions that study Mencius?

The research on Mencius in Chinese and foreign academic circles in the twentieth century can be divided into two research approaches: one is the approach of philosophy/history of ideas, and the other is the approach of history/history of ideas. We discuss these two research approaches and their methodological issues in turn.

The first research approach regards "Mencius" as a philosophical document that has nothing to do with social, political, and economic changes, and intentionally or unintentionally assumes that each idea or concept in Mencius' ideological system has some autonomy. Analyze important concepts in Mencius on this assumption. Scholars who adopt this research approach are philosophers or intellectual historians who focus on conceptual analysis. Ivor Armstrong Richards (1893-1979) in the 1930s, [14] post-war Hong Kong and Taiwan New Confucianists Tang Junyi (1908-1978), Xu Fuguan (1902-1982), Mou Zongsan (1905-1995), [15] and Li Minghui, [16] Xin Guanglai and others [17] all adopt this research approach, which can be called the "intrinsic research approach".

The second research approach often considers Mencius and his thoughts in the context of history or cultural history, paying special attention to analyzing the ups and downs of Mencius in the history of thought. This research approach is barely adequate. It is called the "external research method" and focuses on interpreting the connotation of Mencius within the historical and cultural context. Xu Fuguan, [21] Kondo Masanori [22] and Huang Junjie [23] are close to this research approach.
