Introduction to the Tanah Lot Temple

The Yanguan Tanah Lot Temple, commonly known as the "Temple Palace", is located at No. 150 Chunxi Road, Yanguan Town, Haining City, Zhejiang Province. It was built in the eighth year of Yongzheng reign of Qing Dynasty (1730), covering an area of ??more than 40 acres. It is divided into three axes from north to south. On the central axis there are Shanmen, Yimen, main hall, imperial stele pavilion and sleeping hall. The halls are connected by stone tunnels.

On the east-west axis, there are buildings such as Tianhou Palace, Shenlei Temple, Narcissus Pavilion, Zhaitang, Taoist temples, pavilions, and pools. There is a stone square in front of the mountain gate, a stone lion across the street, two flagpoles, and two stone squares. In front is the river, which leads to a bridge. To the south of the bridge are the grassland and Song's house.

The temple enshrines the "Zhejiang Poseidon". Those who worship the Poseidon and those who contributed to the seawall were official sacrifices from the Qing Dynasty, praying to the gods to "enlighten me and protect me."

The entire temple building was built in the Qing official style, and Li Hong was standardized. It was famous in the south of the Yangtze River many times by the Qing emperors, leaving monuments to Yongzheng and Qianlong father and son. There are still buildings on the central axis and the stone square, stone lions, flagpole, stone square and Qingcheng Bridge in front of it, covering an area of ??about 15 acres.

This temple is one of the best-preserved Tanah Lot temples in China and the largest existing official architectural remains in Jiangnan. This temple dedicated to the God of Poseidon has a high status and is known as the "Forbidden City in the South of the Yangtze River".

In March of the eighth year of Yongzheng (1730), Zhejiang governor Li Wei built the Tanah Lot Temple and opened up 40 acres of land at Xichunmen (now No. 150 Chunxi Road, Yanguan Town). In November of the following year, this temple dedicated to the "Zhejiang Poseidon" was completed.

During the Xianfeng period (1851-1861), some buildings of the Tanah Lot Temple were destroyed by war and were rebuilt in the 11th year of Guangxu (1885). It was hit hard again during the Anti-Japanese War and the Cultural Revolution.

The scenic spot was restored again in 2000 and opened to the public. The existing building area is less than one-third of the original one. In May 2001, Tanah Lot Temple was announced as a national key cultural relic protection unit.
