The footwall of the fault refers to

The upper wall of the fault is the fault plate above the fault plane.

If the fault plane is inclined (as shown by the red box at +0 in Figure 65438), the rock above the fault plane is called footwall, and the rock below the fault plane is called footwall. Thirdly, the judgment of footwall and footwall is not based on relative position, but on the relationship between rock block and fault plane.
