What does Gong Sheng Ming mean?

Government produces light, partiality produces darkness: justice leads to political clarity, while partiality leads to political darkness.

"Xunzi. "Bugou No. 3": "Gongxing produces enlightenment, partiality produces interpretation, trepidation produces wisdom, deceit produces obstruction; integrity produces spirit, and boasting produces confusion." In ancient times, a stone was erected in the middle of the front hall of the Yamen in Fuzhou County, with three characters "Gongsheng Ming" engraved on the south side and sixteen characters "Er's salary and erlu, the people's wealth makes the people easy to abuse, but God's hard to deceive" on the north. In the winter of 1948, the Liaoshen Campaign entered its climax. The city of Shenyang is in a state of depression. Hou Wailu, an expert in the history of ideas, found a seal in an antique shop, which was engraved with the words "Gongshengmingming, partiality produces darkness". The knife skills are sharp and refreshing, and the layout is extraordinary, especially the words "bright" and "dark". The lines are strong, "bright" is intentionally larger, and "dark" is intentionally smaller, creating a contrast that is very relevant. At that time, most people had no intention of buying this thing. But the boss saw Hou Wailu's temperament and demeanor and knew he was an expert, so he made the deal without giving a single penny. Soon, Guo Moruo saw the seal and liked it very much. Hou Wailu gave the seal to him. In order to thank the Hou for his kindness, Guo Moruo wrote a couplet and gave it to Hou Wailu as a souvenir. The first couplet is "Gong produces light, partiality produces darkness", and the second line is "Zhi Leshan, Ren Le Shui". The contrast is neat and the content is appropriate and profound.
