There are no hotels around HKUST, but further into the city is the bustling area of Hexi District, where you can find good hotels. If you take a taxi, tell the driver to go to the market in Jianshan, Li Shuguang, where you can buy clothes. Opposite the market is a large residential area. There shouldn't be much money for a taxi.

Binjiang road and Heping Road in Heping District of Tianjin are both pedestrian streets, which can be reached by all stations near HKUST.

Snack Street is Heather Food Street, which is also close to Binjiang Road. You can walk there.
