Mianning County, which belongs to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, is located in the southwest of Sichuan Province, in the north of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, with Yuexi and Xide counties in the east, Xichang and Yanyuan counties (cities) in the south, Yalong River and Yak Mountain in the west, Muli and Jiulong counties in the north and Bodhisattva Mountain in the north, with a total area of 4,423 square kilometers. By the end of 2022, the permanent population of Mianning County was 365,000.

Mianning is located in Panxi Rift Valley. The Anning River and the Nanyajiang River originate in China, and the Yalong River winds in the southwest. It is divided into two secondary structural units with different properties in the county. It is bounded by the northern section of Anninghe deep fault (Shimian Tianwan-Mianning Xiaoyanjing), Nanhe fault and Lizhuang-Yangpingyu fault (south of Jinhe-Qihe fault), with Kangdian platform uplift in the east and Yanyuan Lijiang platform marginal depression in the west.

Kangdian Tailong is divided into three sub-regions, with Xiaoxiangling anticline and Lu Gu anticlinorium in the east, Anninghe deep fault basin and valley plain in the middle and Bijiashan-Yakeshan early Proterozoic continental crust crystalline basement in the west.
