5. Extremely heavy debris flow in Zhouqu

At around 22:00 on August 7, 2010, a sudden heavy rain fell in the mountainous area in the northeastern part of Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, with a rainfall of 97 mm. Lasting for more than 40 minutes, it triggered a huge flash flood geological disaster in four ditches including Sanyanyu and Luojiayu.

The debris flow was about 5 kilometers long, with an average width of 300 meters, an average thickness of 5 meters, and a total volume of 7.5 million cubic meters, the area through which it flows was razed. As of September 7, 2010, 1,557 people were killed, 284 were missing, and a total of 2,315 people were treated in outpatient clinics in the Zhouqu August 7 mudslide disaster.
