Appearance characteristics of oriental bottlenose dolphins

Oriental bottlenose dolphins have the dorsal fin, spindle-shaped body and beak of ordinary bottlenose dolphins. The back is stone blue or dark gray, with dark flippers and the lower abdomen is often pink. The dyeing pattern of ventral fin will change according to age and geographical location. Some studies claim that ventral fin staining is a sign of sexual maturity, especially for female dolphins.

The total length of the adult dolphin's head and body is between 175~400 cm, weighing about 230 kg, the pectoral fin is about 23 cm long and the caudal fin is 60 cm long. According to measurements, adult female dolphins in some areas are 200 cm long, while adult male dolphins are usually longer and heavier.

Like most members of the genus bottlenose, the eastern bottlenose dolphins have conical single-pointed teeth with a diameter of about 1 cm. Generally speaking, bottlenose dolphins have about 20~28 teeth on each side of the upper and lower jaws. Another feature of the skull is that the snout from the front edge of nostril to the end of premolar is concave.
