The incident of drowning students in Laiwu

At about 2 pm on June 9, 2012, a tragedy occurred in the Huihe River near Gaozhuang Village, Zhaili Town, Laicheng District, Laiwu City. Seven local teenagers who were swimming in the river unfortunately drowned. People familiar with the matter said that about 11 or 12 children went swimming in the river at that time. These children range in age from 11 to 16 years old, or are students at Yangzhuang Town Central Middle School in Laicheng District. At about 4:30 pm yesterday, rescuers fished out the first drowning child, and at about 7:30 pm that night, the last child was fished out. Unfortunately, all seven children drowned and none survived.

Some locals said that although the incident occurred in the Huihe River, compared with other places in the river, the water level at the incident occurred was deeper, and the terrain and water flow were complex. This was caused by years of sand dredging. . Whether such terrain conditions were one of the reasons for the tragedy has not yet been confirmed.
