What did I bring with me for hiking the world’s top “Shishapangma Grand Ring”?
For those who love mountains, Shishapangma is no stranger.
This is the only 8,000-meter snow mountain in China.
It has the most beautiful ice tower forest in China.
The vastness and loneliness of the Great Himalayas
are vividly explained here.
Only the most persistent travelers
will set foot here.
Working relationship,
I visited 5 times Xifeng.
When I passed by Xifeng for the first time,
I used my telephoto to zoom in and was shocked by the large straight wall on the north side.
If you have the chance, you must go to the foot of the mountain to see it, I think.
Filming NirmalPurja's summit of Shishapangma,
This is the second confrontation with Shifeng.
The night before the summit, at the Langqiangcuo Lake opposite the national highway on the north side of Xifeng,
I found a seat and looked at the mountain from a distance. I watched the climbing route all night, and took pictures of the headlight trajectory of the great master reaching the summit.
Waiting, waiting to take pictures

In December 2019, it was a windy day of -30 degrees in Tibetan areas.
Because I participated in the filming of a cinema movie,
We hiked across the glacial lake to approach the serac forest.
The ice tongue looks very small from a distance, but it is extremely shocking when you walk in.
In front of the ancient glacier that escapes the boundaries of time,
Nature reveals its most beautiful features. The appearance of primitive wilderness.
We camped for one night in the Ice Pagoda Forest
National Day 2020, Shishapangma Hiking on the Great Circle Route,
I was finally able to stand at the foot of Shishapangma,
and seriously see Shifeng from three angles: south, east and north.
The fifth time is to lead the team on the National Day in 2021.
Xifeng and I already have a tacit understanding.
I am obsessed with its magnificence,
and more and more Understand its hidden dangers and moody temper.
This understanding was gained at the cost of blood and tears.
While shooting deep into the ice tower forest,
the aerial photographer who was accompanying me fell on the ice.
Because there was no Wearing gloves, my hand got pricked and got a big cut from the ice.
After emergency treatment, I rushed to Geelong for stitches...
The importance of equipment is fully exposed here.
With the popularity of outdoor sports, Xifeng’s reputation has gradually increased.
I was quite shocked by the number of people hiking on National Day in 2021.
There were more than 100 tents in one camp!
In addition to the commercial team, a large number of AA heavy equipment also swarmed in.
It would be great if more people recognized the healthy lifestyle of hiking,
It’s just that the level of people who come here varies.
It’s hard to describe the equipment that comes with it.
The sleeping bags are not up to standard and some are shivering from the cold, the soles of their shoes are glued open, and some have lost their gloves.
… …
All seemingly insignificant bugs,
can easily be magnified in the extreme environment of the plateau,
causing irreversible consequences.
A while ago, there was even an article "Looking for the lost relatives on the Shishama Peak Hiking"
It was a hit in the outdoor circle...
(I didn’t know this Has the missing brother been found?
Here, I would like to share with you based on my personal experience and understanding of the Xifeng weather route.
Some practical sharing,
From the four major aspects of food, clothing, housing, transportation and others,
will give you some specific reference related to long-term plateau hiking.
Everyone is also welcome to leave a message for communication.
Creative position statement: The author is a mountain photographer as a main business and a team leader as a side job. The following is a summary of his many years of high-altitude hiking photography and team leadership work experience. Please don’t criticize me, this is my personal opinion. , only for reference and communication with those in need.
1. Are you really wearing the right clothes?
How to bring travel clothes?
Without describing the four aspects of weather, altitude, hiking duration and scene, asking this question directly is tantamount to being a hooligan.
The National Day holiday is often the choice of most people. In most cases, the weather is better during National Day. Even if there is bad weather, it usually does not last more than 5 days (Note: This article mainly uses the National Day period as a reference to list the required items).
It was still foggy and light raining the night before
The weather was sunny the next morning

The altitude of the Xifeng Grand Loop hiking ranges from more than 3,800 meters to more than 5,500 meters. The temperature difference between altitudes seems to be only 10 degrees. But high altitude often means unpredictable weather, with rain, snow and wind being the norm, and the wind-chill effect cannot be ignored.
Different altitudes and their environmental conditions
Hiking China Leader A Le
2021 National Day Entire During the trip, the clothes I brought included what I was wearing:
The double-layered merino wool sweater is very powerful, taking into account both warmth, comfort and breathability. , even if you sweat, it can be discharged quickly, it is close to the body and does not itch, and there is no smell at all after wearing it for half a month.
Many times I only wear this one for hiking, with a soft shell on top. It used to cost more than 1,000 yuan, but now it’s cheaper on discount.
There is also a set of ordinary thermal underwear, which I usually use as spare clothing.
For fleece pants, choose basic ones, from Decathlon or other brands, ranging from tens of dollars to one or two hundred dollars.
Longha is a relatively niche brand. My soft shell set is said to have 3 layers of waterproof fabric, is mid-length, and does not contain PFC. , are recyclable clothes. All pockets have zippers so things won't fall out when put in them. There are zippers on the armpits of the jacket and pants for ventilation and heat dissipation.
So even if I wear thick clothes underneath, I can unzip my pants to avoid excessive sweating. When I’m resting, I can zip them up when I’m cold, and the temperature can be adjusted at any time. I have been wearing it for 4 years, and the waterproof effect has declined in some areas. After washing it, I restored the waterproof layer myself, and the waterproof effect was restored.
The cotton jacket is very comfortable and keeps you warm even when it gets wet. Meile is a French company specializing in mountaineering brands. The clothes are very trustworthy and the price is really high. I bought them on Amazon before and the price was less than 1,000 yuan, which was very worth it. Later, I checked in China and it cost nearly 2,000 yuan. Amazon smells really good
Pathfinder is a domestic brand. In recent years, the clothes have become better and better, and they are also much cheaper. They are very cost-effective and have detachable three-in-one down. The inner jacket can be worn all year round, just take it apart.
Just focus on the quick-drying function of underwear. If you have higher requirements, you can wear deodorizing quick-drying underwear.
If you are a girl, you can bring disposable underwear to change.
If you are new to outdoor and don’t know other brands, Decathlon can be your first choice. In the shopping mall, their sections are very detailed, and each item is The functions of the clothes will be clearly stated.
Everyone may have heard of the "3-layer dressing rule", which simply means:
I am less afraid Due to my cold constitution, I stayed in Tibet for 20 days on this trip.
When I went to Lhasa on September 22, I wore a long-sleeved shirt and trousers, and brought a hat for protection. When I go out in the morning, I put on a fleece jacket and put it in my backpack so I can take it out and wear it at any time.
It was quite cold in the morning and evening when we were riding in the car on the way out. After the sun came out at noon, the car was like an oven, dry and hot. I was wearing short sleeves and all my thick clothes were in my backpack. , put it on before getting off the car to avoid freezing.
Also, be sure to wear a hat, which not only protects you from the sun but also prevents you from catching cold and wind, as wind and cold can easily induce hypersensitivity.
During the hike, the temperature is low in the morning, about 5-10 degrees. When I first get up, I wear thicker clothes, usually 3 or more pieces to ensure you don’t catch cold. You can remove one item and put it in your backpack before setting off.
You can remove one item and put it in your backpack before departure. It is recommended to wear 3 pieces for hiking, but you can also wear 2 pieces. If the weather is fine, you will start to warm up and even sweat after walking for about 20 minutes.
In case of rain or snow, you should wear relatively waterproof clothes outside, such as soft shells or jackets. Of course, you can also put on a raincoat directly. I am also used to holding an umbrella on flat roads.
After arriving at the campground in the afternoon, besides setting up the tent, the most important thing is to add clothes - the temperature drops very quickly at night.
Personally, during the day, I wear merino wool thermal pants with a soft shell on the outside. I usually don’t add pants. I take off the soft shell and replace it with a Myle cotton jacket. A down jacket, slippers and a pair of dry thick socks to give your feet a full rest.
I mainly wear down jackets as work clothes. Down is warm and the jacket is waterproof. The main reason is that I wear this jacket a lot. It's a bit dirty and worn out (I often go outdoors and I can't bear to wear new clothes to do chores).
Some people may ask, why am I wearing a cotton jacket instead of a down jacket?
There are down jackets, and I used to wear them outdoors, but down jackets don’t keep me warm when they get damp or get wet, and they are not easy to dry, and the environment I live in is often harsh. , so now I choose cotton clothing as the thermal layer - this is a specific choice based on my own habits and team requirements.
2. Food is the most important thing for the people!
Eating outdoors does not mean making ends meet. It is important to eat well when you are full. As for how to prepare food, it depends on whether you are following a business team or cooking by yourself.
Commercial Team
Most of the commercial teams on this route have a standard of 4 dishes and 1 soup, so we don’t have to worry about dinner, we mainly consider breakfast How to make road meals (lunch while walking during the day) more suitable for you?
Do it yourself
You will need to bring more things to fire by yourself, so you need to follow them carefully Transportation, storage resistance, good taste, small size, and easy to cook.
I personally have the following food recommendations:
The braised pork in this restaurant is very delicious. , I have carried their cooking bags on many high-altitude routes. It is very convenient to heat. You only need to soak it in hot water for 1 minute or steam it and put it on the pot lid for a while. It is the fastest when paired with rice or noodles. You can have a delicious meal in ten minutes.
Freeze-dried instant soup tastes better than baked soup. Just rinse it with boiling water and you can drink it immediately. There are dozens of flavors. , you can also buy some instant vermicelli and add it, boil a pot of water and a meal is ready.
Outdoors, 6g can be used to brew about 350ml of water, and 9g needs almost 500ml of water.
If you feel that your rice is not cooked well, you can buy cooked and dehydrated food, add boiling water for more than 15 minutes and then you can eat it (you can buy Try one pack at home to see if you get used to it, so as not to find out you don’t like it when you go outdoors).
I cook the sausage into slices and cubes at home, then air-dry them again to reduce the moisture.
Although the taste will decrease a little, it will be much lighter and more chewy. You can put a few pieces in it when making cooking bags, and add some vermicelli to accompany it with bread or other pasta. Eat together.
No matter which way you eat, it is highly recommended to buy a set of tableware and refuse to use disposable tableware.
The largest amount of garbage outdoors is toilet paper and various disposable items. Bring in as little as possible so as not to create too much garbage!
I personally recommend this kind of wooden tableware. It is relatively light, and it does not make harsh sounds with bowls or plates when eating. The texture is very comfortable. Just imagine taking out the cold tableware to eat a hot meal in a very cold place... It's not as warm as this wooden one.
3. On the importance of a “good house”
There is no signal outdoors, so you usually take a break much earlier than in the city. I personally am a relatively high sleeper, so I have a fair say in how to sleep well outdoors.
In terms of sleeping position, make sure that the upper body lies relatively flat and the feet can be slightly higher. If it is also flat, I will put an empty backpack or clothes on the calf position and lift it. If it is higher, it will be more comfortable to sleep at night, and there will be no fatigue or discomfort in the calves the next day.
1. Tent
Generally, two people in a commercial team sleep in a 3 or 4-person mountain tent, and additional fees are required for single occupancy. Pay some fees. If you bring your own tent, we recommend a four-season tent, which is a tent with a snow skirt, which is more resistant to wind and sand and warmer.
If the wind blows in the Shishapangma area, it can be level 5-6 or even greater. Especially in the Goncuo camp, the wind and sand will be very strong, and a gust of wind will blow through the tent. There is a layer of soil inside, and it often takes several days to scrape.
This highlights the benefits of the four-season tent - with the snow skirt, the sealing will be better and it will be warmer. When you get out of the tent in the morning, you will obviously feel that the temperature difference is very large, up to more than 10 degrees. .
2. Sleeping bag
Cotton sleeping bags are a long-term taboo and come standard with down.
When buying a sleeping bag, there will be labels on what type of down it is, how many grams of down it contains, and what is the temperature of the sleeping bag... These values ??can be fatal if you don't understand them.
When hiking the Shishapangma Great Circle, it is recommended that the sleeping bag has a comfortable temperature of -5 degrees to -10 degrees before October 5th. After the 5th, it will be colder and a warmer sleeping bag will be needed. . If you are afraid of the cold, you can choose a sleeping bag with a comfortable temperature of -15. However, the temperature scale of some off-brand products is not accurate. You can refer to the down filling amount, which generally should not be less than 1000g.
If you are worried about the cold, you can also use a sleeping bag with a heating liner; in some counties, villages and towns where accommodation conditions are poor, if you don’t want to cover them with quilts, you can get into the sleeping bag liner Put another quilt inside.
I brought the sleeping bag liner but didn’t use it. I lent it to a team member on the way. He said that he woke up a lot from the cold the night before. times, constantly turning over.
In this case, you can put all the thick clothes on the sleeping bag, which is equivalent to thickening the sleeping bag, and put the raincoat, rain cover, backpack, etc. Use a moisture-proof pad underneath to further insulate the cold from the ground, or cover it on top of a sleeping bag.
3. Moisture-proof mat
I will use a thicker inflatable moisture-proof mat, so that even if the ground is slightly uneven, It will also be very warm when you sleep on it. On the other hand, my air mattress has a relatively high R value (heat value), so my back will not feel cold.
If you are worried about the air cushion being broken, you can bring an air cushion repair kit. If it is accidentally broken, you can repair it. If you have very high sleep requirements, you can also choose this one.
The disadvantage is that it is too big... If you have weak hands-on skills and are afraid that the inflatable air mattress will be punctured, the egg trough is the safest.
4. Others
Some things are not necessary, but they can enhance happiness and experience. For example:
4. The journey is difficult, the journey is difficult!
From mobile phones, ID cards, border security passes to gloves, hats, trekking poles, headscarves, and so on, every trip is like packing a grocery store.
Here, I will introduce the necessary supplies from beginning to end, and indicate the usage scenarios and uses.
The Decathlon fleece hat is the one I use most frequently. First of all, it is very light. Although it is a thin layer, it plays a very good role in keeping warm and protecting. It can be worn during the day. Hats or sun visors that match clothes are very cost-effective. I bought 5 of them in one day.
The fisherman hat is also one of the equipment I will bring. It can block the sun and ultraviolet rays in all directions. The brim can be folded into the desired shape at will, which is very convenient to use. You can choose a thicker hat by yourself, or use it with the hat on your clothes to reduce the amount of equipment you carry.
The headlamp I use is the top brand Phoenix. It is the choice of many people when climbing Mount Everest. The low temperature performance is very stable, -40 degrees. Still works fine.
There are many usage scenarios and functions of headscarves. Some outdoor brands or business clubs will give away headscarves. The quality varies. You can buy a better buff headscarf with sun protection index. Very good, breathable and skin-friendly.
The raincoats produced by Sanfeng are commonly used. They are brightly colored and light in weight. The ones with sleeves are preferred to prevent rain and snow from getting into the sleeves or clothes when it is windy. The belt can be tightened to prevent wind from entering, and the backpack also has corresponding space for protection.
I also use Decathlon gloves, because they are consumables and I am not willing to buy too expensive gloves. The first joints of the index finger and thumb You can touch the screen by cutting a hole in the position, which is convenient for taking pictures. Of course, there are also gloves that can touch the screen. Not only are they expensive, but the gloves may not work in rainy or low-temperature environments.
You can bring two pairs of these gloves in case they get wet or extremely cold; if weight is not a concern, you can bring an extra pair of thick waterproof gloves.
Outdoors are inseparable from a watch, which records your every step, heart rate, and stride length. This watch of Gaochi VETIX2 is a huge improvement over the first generation. It has been updated and improved. The dial is larger, the battery life is longer, and the positioning is much more accurate even in the city. The most important thing is that it has 32GB of memory, which can store music. You no longer need to use your phone to connect headphones. Saved a lot of power.
I did some actual hiking in Shishapangma. From departure to home, I hiked for more than 10 days. I recorded the track all day every day, set the alarm clock, and occasionally looked at the map navigation. *** After 20 days, I still have more than 40 batteries left after I get home. If I listen to music, I don’t know if it can consume all its power. For specific functions, you can search for key words on each platform to read professional reviews.
Wear thick socks when hiking. On the one hand, it is to keep warm, and on the other hand, it is to prevent feet from blistering. The thicker the socks, the more comfortable you will be when hiking.
I brought several different brands of socks. Urwan is a Nordic brand. The entire series of products is made of merino wool and is very comfortable to wear. I also bring suitable waterproof socks, just in case.
Snow gloves are not necessarily worn only when it snows. They can be worn when it rains or for daily hiking. They can prevent the trouser legs from getting dirty. You must take it with you when hiking in Tibet during National Day.
Simple crampons are a must on the seracs of the Shishapangma Grand Loop. Otherwise, wrestling is a trivial matter. More importantly, with them, you can take very good photos. Photos,
The biggest advantage of trekking poles is that they are light. Compared with other brands, which are often hundreds of times larger, Noke’s carbon fiber trekking poles are extremely cost-effective. . If you like heavier trekking poles, or often go to rocky places, you can consider buying metal trekking poles, which have better wear resistance and support, but will be a lot heavier.
In addition to thermos cups, I personally also like to use water bags. There are three reasons. The first is that I don’t have to put down my bag to get a water bottle and can refill water at any time. The second is that I am sensitive to heat. The demand for water is very small. The third is that the water bag is lighter and can hold more water, and can be fetched at the camp. I use the Duote one, which comes with a protective cover. Open the cover and bite the water outlet and rotate it slightly to release water. It is hygienic and convenient.
The shoes I wear are Scapa’s Rangers. These shoes are designed with V-soles and have strong anti-slip grip. At the same time, it is made of GORE-TEX waterproof and breathable fabric, so it is not afraid of bad weather. It is much lighter than many other hiking shoes, only about 475 grams.
No matter what brand you buy, it must be high-cut when hiking outdoors, which can prevent sprains and make walking more powerful. After buying, wear them a few times before going hiking. Never wear new shoes for hiking. It is easy to wear your feet and cause other problems that cannot be solved.
5. Don’t miss these gadgets!
For power banks, I personally recommend Xiaomi and Orric.
Both of the above power banks support fast charging. For me, the biggest advantage is that there will be no abnormality when charging the camera at work, and it can be stable for a long time. of power supply. I have used other brands before, and found that the charge would stop after a few minutes, or the camera status would be abnormal, or even interrupt the process of time-lapse shooting.
Due to shooting needs, I usually bring 1-2 bull power strips when I go out, which is convenient for quick charging and notebook work. I also bring A Greenlink multi-port USB charger to charge cameras, headlamps, spare batteries and other electronic devices.
In high-altitude and low-temperature environments, all-metal card readers will be greatly affected, and the reading speed is even less than 1M/second, so if you have low temperature If you need to copy materials, it is recommended to buy a wired card reader with a plastic housing.
Cameras and mobile phones are not recommended because I am a photographer and have a lot of equipment and are not of general reference. The specific equipment models are as follows. The pictures in this article are all taken by these equipments.
Mobile phone: Sony Xperia1 Mark2
Camera: Sony RX0IIA7R2 A7R3
Lens: 12mmf2.824-70mmf2.8 100-400mmf4.5-5.6
There are also two tripods and other shooting equipment that I won’t go into details.
Toiletries kits range from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars. Other first aid kits, stoves, ponytails, water cups, etc. can be purchased according to your needs. You need to choose.
As for the most important item - bags, I took 3 bags with me from home, two camel bags and 1 backpack. The functions are to store one in the hotel, one to go into the mountains, and one to carry on the body.
The bag I choose to store at the hotel is an Osprey camel bag 120L with wheels.
The advantage of this bag is that you can put things anywhere, the space is very large, and its wheels are the secret weapon and are super durable. I often take the steps from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor and drag them directly down. There are no problems with the wheels and support frame at all, which is very awesome. I have loaded up to 40KG of luggage, which saves a lot of effort when pulling it around.
Camel bags are used for loading during light travel, and they are waterproof and wear-resistant.
I also use a Dote backpack, Forda 32L, ginger color, the photo effect is very beautiful, I mainly carry 1 water bag, 1-2 pieces of clothing, 15 It weighs more than ten kilograms. Compared with the Speed ??30L I carried before, it is much more comfortable, and the belt carrying system is more supportive. Strong and very good at dissipating heat.
Needless to say, everyone knows the German brands. The three BBA automotive giants are there. The backpacks are not bad either. They have a 5-year warranty and lifetime maintenance. Use them casually, and they will be broken if they are broken. Just ask them to fix it.
Having said so much in bits and pieces,
I hope I can share my personal experience with you. Here are some practical references for everyone,
If you have any useful outdoor equipment recommendations,
You are also welcome to leave a message to share.
There are no fixed numbers in the mountains and wilderness,
In addition to choosing a reliable group to travel with,
is more important The most important thing is to be responsible for yourself.
Only by making thorough preparations can you be prepared.
