On June 25th, 2009, the the State Council executive meeting decided that by 2020, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP will be reduced by 40% to 45% compared with 2005. The State Council put forward the concept of "low-carbon tourism" in "Opinions on Accelerating the Development of Tourism", and tourism was listed as a strategic pillar industry of the national economy for the first time.

Low-carbon hotels can not only improve the ecological environment, save energy and reduce emissions, but also reduce the cost of enterprises and improve economic benefits, which has opened up a new development direction for the hotel industry.
