The first was Bernardo del Carpio, a legendary hero who continued to appear in Spanish literature. The second was Raymond of Burgundy, who promoted the large-scale expansion of the city at the end of the 11th century. At that time, Castilians, Galicians, Mozarebs, Jews and Franks all came to the city. Immigration, the legal structure and territorial structure of the feudal system were also clearly defined during the same period. Cide's disciple, Bishop Geronimo, was in charge of the city's church organization and began working on the construction of the cathedral.
Among the many literary characters associated with Salamanca, two names have become household names: Little Lazarus of the River Tormes and Celestina. "Little Lazarus on the River Tormes" is an adventure story written in the first person by an unknown writer and published in 1544. As his name suggests, the protagonist, who behaves independently and unruly, was born on the banks of the Tormes River and spends his life trying not to let himself be too tired due to moral issues or noble sentiments. This novel marked the birth of Spanish picaresque literature and became one of the sources of modern novels. As for "Celestina" ("The Tragicomedy of Callisto and Melibea") (1499), it was probably written by Fernando de Rojas in Salamanca. The unforgettable character of the tragic couple and the old matchmaker Celestina became one of the most important precursors of modern drama.
