What durian variety is the best?

The origin of Maoshan Wang's name

There are many legends about the origin of the name of King Mao Shan. One is the old variety, which was brought back from a small town called Hua Wangsheng in Kelantan. Hua transliterates "Guamusang", which means cave and "Sang Mu", which means civet.

Hua Wangsheng is also a cave where civets live. Malaysian Chinese translated the name of this place as "Flower Flourishing" or "Sheng Mao", so this durian variety is called "Maoshengwang". Later, it was passed down from mouth to mouth and became the homophonic "Cat Mountain King". Therefore, King Mao Shan is also called "Musangjin" in English.

Another way of saying this is that the name of Maoshan Wang comes from the Malaysian civet cat, and its Malay "Sang Mu" is homophonic with "Maoshan". Civet cats with a keen sense of smell are experts in identifying the quality of Maoshan Wang. Malaysians gave the ripe durian that fell from the tree but didn't crack to a civet trapped in a cage. It smelled it and distinguished the good from the bad. If it is Maoshan Wang, civets will be very excited when they smell it.
