Overview:

Ceratopogonidae, Diptera. There are many kinds of mouthparts, about 4000 of which are known all over the world. May spread Japanese encephalitis and some filariasis. Midges are small, fly silently, and often gather to bite people and animals. Midges are completely deformed insects. Adults are about 2~5 mm long and dark brown. The head is nearly spherical, the compound eyes are developed, the antennae are filiform, and the mouthparts of blood-sucking animals are developed, but they are shorter than mosquitoes.

Common types:

There are many kinds of midges, about 4,000 in the world and about 200 in China. Only six of them are warm-blooded animals, and the rest are nourished by biting amphibians and invertebrates or plant juices. There are three known genera of bloodsucking midges in China, namely Culex pipiens, Lacostegia and Leptocida.
