It is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Commerce and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is also the second batch of key universities in Zhejiang Province and a national model university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. Its original name was Hangzhou Commercial College, and it was renamed Zhejiang Gongshang University in 2004.
