What is the origin of tipping?

Tipping is practiced in many countries around the world. Tips, also known as service fees, are a form of payment for guests to thank the reception staff. They are an important income for service staff and can provide customers with satisfactory services.

The tipping system originated in London, England in the 18th century. At that time, bowls with the words "To insureprompt seivice" (to ensure prompt service) were usually placed on the tables in local hotels. After customers sit down and put a small amount of change into the bowl, they will receive quick and attentive service from the service staff. Later, this practice evolved into a reward to thank service personnel. When the first letters of the above English words are combined, they become "tips".

It is a popular custom in many countries in the world for customers to tip service staff. Since there are no unified regulations on the amount of tips in various countries and industries, customers are encouraged to pay according to their circumstances. But be aware that some countries explicitly prohibit tipping. For example, in Singapore, tipping is considered a poor service quality.
