Dandong is a multi-ethnic community, with 40 ethnic groups including Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Hui, Korean and Xibe. Among the ethnic minorities except Han nationality, Manchu has the largest population, mainly concentrated in Fengcheng, Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County towns (townships) and donggang city and Longman towns. Mongolians are mainly concentrated in Dabao Mongolian Town, Fengcheng City.

Dandong is located at123 22' east longitude to125 42' north latitude to 4109'. It faces Sinuiju City of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea across the river in the east, the Yellow Sea in the south, Anshan in the west, Dalian in the southwest and Benxi in the north. The maximum horizontal distance from east to west in Dandong area is 196 km, the maximum vertical distance from north to south is 160 km, and the total area is 15222 km2.
