What's the difference between waterborne paint and traditional paint?

Waterborne coatings are green, energy-saving, safe and convenient, and have developed rapidly in the world. As a pure environmental protection product diluted with water, water-based paint has the characteristics of low formaldehyde and low aromatic hydrocarbon compared with traditional solvent-based paint, and is a new generation of high-tech sunrise products. Many people don't understand water-based paint, and they can't get rid of the misunderstanding of solvent-based paint. They think that water-based paint is not as good as solvent-based paint. In fact, the water added to the water-based paint plays a diluting role and will not dissolve the film-forming substance. Solvent-based coatings are dry films and parallel films, while water-based paints are polymer films and dense films. The latter is a real high-grade paint film, which belongs to high-tech products.

1. What is water-based paint?

Water-based paint is a kind of water-based diluent, which contains no organic solvent. Does not contain toxic heavy metals such as benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde and free TDI. Non-toxic and non-irritating, harmless to human body and not polluting the environment. The paint film is plump, crystal clear and flexible, and has the characteristics of water resistance, wear resistance, aging resistance, yellowing resistance, quick drying and convenient use. Any coating with water as solvent or dispersion medium can be called water-based coating. Waterborne paints include water-soluble paints, water-diluted paints and water-dispersible paints.

1. water-soluble type: water-soluble resin is a film-forming substance, represented by polyvinyl alcohol and its various modifications, in addition to water-soluble alkyd resin, water-soluble epoxy resin and inorganic polymer water-based resin.

2. Water dilution type: Water dilution type refers to that the emulsion is a film-forming substance in the future, so that the solvent-based resin is dissolved in an organic solvent, and then the resin is dispersed in water by strong mechanical stirring with the aid of an emulsifier to form an emulsion, which is called post-emulsified emulsion. This kind of paint can be diluted with water during construction.

3. Water dispersion type: Water dispersion type mainly refers to coatings prepared with synthetic resin emulsion as film-forming substance. Emulsion refers to the dispersed emulsion composed of small particles dispersed in water, which is polymerized by unsaturated vinyl monomer in the presence of emulsifier at a certain temperature during mechanical stirring. A coating prepared by adding a little emulsion to a water-soluble resin cannot be called latex paint. Strictly speaking, water-diluted paint can't be called latex paint, but it is also customarily classified as latex paint.

Second, the difference between water-based paint and traditional paint:

1. Waterborne paint is based on a variety of polymer resins, with water as the dispersion medium and special additives, so that organic matter (filler pigment) and emulsion resin form a network structure; Traditional coatings take vegetable oil and synthetic resin as the main film-forming substances, supplemented by various additives and pigments. There are 15 series and several varieties, which must be diluted with organic solvents such as toluene and xylene when used.

2. Waterborne paint films are divided into matte, glossy and high gloss, which are alkali-resistant, acid-resistant, weather-resistant, salt-resistant, water-resistant, flame-retardant, fast drying time, large coverage area, good rust-proof and corrosion-resistant performance, rust-proof effect, and can be well combined with various paints without any reaction; The traditional paint film is bright, hard, water-resistant, weather-resistant, chemical-resistant and good in electrical insulation, but it is fragile, takes a long time to dry, and the low-grade paint film is prone to yellowing. Different paints are not suitable for combination because of their different properties.

3. Waterborne coatings are widely used in wood, metal, ships, cement, automobiles and other surfaces. , especially suitable for corrosion and rust prevention of pipelines and equipment; Traditional coatings are suitable for different occasions and environments according to different characteristics.

4. The adhesion of water-based paint is higher than that of ordinary paint, which can reach 1-2 grade; The adhesion of traditional coatings is 2-3.

5. The surface drying time of water-based paint is 20 minutes, and the actual drying time is 15 hours; Traditional paint takes 2 hours to dry thoroughly and more than 30 hours to dry thoroughly.
