The population structure of Los Angeles
A large number of immigrants have made Los Angeles a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural international city. Ethnic minorities account for about half of the city's population and there are many immigrant communities. Areas inhabited by various ethnic groups have formed their own "cities", such as Brazil Street, which is full of rich Brazilian culture. Brazilian-Americans can be seen dancing the charming samba at the Brazilian Carnival in March every year. Los Angeles is also one of the major gathering places for Chinese Americans, with about 400,000 Chinese living here. Los Angeles' nickname "Luosheng" is a Cantonese transliteration of early Chinese immigrants from Guangdong. Moreover, the city of Los Angeles belongs to Los Angeles County, so it also means "provincial capital".
However, the mixture of different races also makes Los Angeles, like other big American cities, face powerful racial problems. 1992 there was a big riot in which blacks opposed the abuse of police power by white police.
