What to do if your luggage is lost abroad

It depends on whether you lost it while flying or while playing.

If your luggage is lost while traveling, you can report it to the relevant responsible department. If you are in a hotel, report it to the hotel, or call the police! If you lose your identity document such as your passport, you can go to your local Chinese consulate for help.

If your luggage is lost when flying, you can report the lost luggage to the airline. Example: Air France’s steps for reporting lost luggage.

Air France has two ways to declare lost baggage: the first is to declare it online within 48 hours after arrival, and the second is to declare it at the Air France KLM baggage service department before leaving the airport. To declare lost baggage online, you can fill out a form to declare lost baggage within 48 hours of your flight arrival. To do this, you must provide a baggage receipt.

Where is the luggage receipt number marked?

- If you check in your baggage at the airport, a baggage receipt will be issued to you at the baggage counter.

- If you printed your boarding pass and luggage tag at home, the receipt number is indicated on the emailed luggage receipt page.

Please indicate this number on the online declaration form. At the end of your declaration, you will be given a profile number. Please keep this number to track the progress of your baggage search online. Please note that online declaration of lost luggage is not possible at some airports.

Declaring lost luggage at the airport:

If you have not yet left the arrival airport, please go to Air France Baggage Service*.

Before you leave the airport, you must fill out a form called a Financial Impairment Report (PIR). At the end of your declaration, you will be given a profile number. Please keep this number to track the progress of your baggage search. By using the baggage online search tool, you can track the progress of your baggage profile in real time. To do this, you need to use a profile number. This number will be sent to you at the end of your online declaration, or by a staff member when you declare at the airport. Due to missing luggage, you can apply for reimbursement of such expenses by filling out the online application form within 21 days from the date of actual receipt of the luggage. Please keep your purchase receipt in case you are asked to show it later.

If the luggage is not recovered 21 days after the declaration, the value of the lost items you declared will be used to establish a claim. The program starts spontaneously. Depending on the credentials you present (shopping invoice, proof of purchase), the compensation amount can be up to approximately 1,295 euros (the maximum amount of compensation stipulated in the Montreal Convention). Please note: When checking in your baggage, if the financial value of your baggage exceeds the maximum compensation amount (€1,295*), you can declare the actual value of your baggage. You may receive additional baggage compensation based on the difference in the baggage's estimated value.
