Southwest University of Science and Technology, jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the State Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government, is one of the 14 key universities in the western region. There are three gates on campus. It is one of the designated universities for comprehensive innovation and reform experiments in Sichuan Province. The former Southwest Institute of Technology and Mianyang Institute of Economics and Technology merged to form Southwest University of Science and Technology.
