What are couplets?

Couplets are a national style written by using the characteristics of Chinese characters. Generally, there is no need to rhyme (only couplets in regular poems need to rhyme). Couplets can be roughly divided into poetry couplets and prose couplets. Traditional couplets are connected in form, with the same content, harmonious tone and rigorous antithesis.

Before the Qin and Han dynasties, there was a custom of hanging peach symbols in the New Year. The so-called Fu Tao refers to writing the names of the legendary gods "Shen Tu" and "Lei Yu" on two mahogany boards and hanging them on the left and right doors to ward off evil spirits. It was not until the Five Dynasties that people began to write couplets on mahogany boards.

Meng Changjun, a famous scholar in Shu after the Five Dynasties, wrote ten big characters on the baner during the Spring Festival, which may be the earliest Spring Festival couplets in China. After the Song Dynasty, Spring Festival couplets were very popular among the people. In Wang Anshi's poem, "Thousands of families always exchange new peaches for old ones."

This sentence is a true portrayal of the grand occasion at that time.

Because the appearance of Spring Festival couplets is closely related to peach symbols, the ancients also called Spring Festival couplets "peach symbols". It was not until the Ming Dynasty that people began to use red paper instead of red boards, which led to the Spring Festival couplets we see today.

Couplets also require neat antithesis and joint, with the end in the upper part and the end in the lower part. These characteristics are similar to those of metrical poems. However, couplets are different from poems. They only have couplets. Generally speaking, they are more concise, more flexible, longer or shorter, and more flexible than poems. Couplets can be four characters, five characters, six characters, seven characters, eight characters, nine characters, crosses and dozens of crosses.

There are many forms of couplets, including right and wrong, flowing pairs, couplets, and set sentences.

Couplets are concise, neat and balanced, which is a unique artistic form of Chinese language. It can be said that couplet art is a cultural treasure of the Chinese nation.
