The origin of birthday, the reason of Father's Day?

There are two theories about the origin of Father's Day:

The first statement:

1909 A lady named Bruce Dodd in Washington suddenly had an idea when celebrating Mother's Day: Since there is Mother's Day, why can't there be Father's Day?

Mrs. Dodd and her five younger brothers lost their mothers in their early years and were raised by a loving father. Many years have passed, and every time my father's birthday and death, my six brothers and sisters will always recall my father's hard work to support his family. With the support of Dr. Rasmus, she wrote a sincere letter to the state government, calling for the establishment of Father's Day, and suggested that the festival be set on June 5, her father's birthday. The state government adopted her suggestion and hastily designated Father's Day as 19, that is, the third Sunday in June of 1909. The following year, Spokane, where Mrs Dodd lived, officially celebrated this festival, and the mayor announced the establishment of Father's Day as a statewide memorial day. Later, other states also celebrated Father's Day. On Father's Day, people choose some flowers to show their respect for their fathers. People adopted Mrs. Dodd's suggestion, wearing red roses to express their love for their living fathers and white roses to express their condolences for their dead fathers. Later in Vancouver, people chose to wear white lilacs, and Pennsylvania people used dandelions to show their respect for their fathers.

In order to standardize Father's Day, Parliament is strongly urged to recognize this festival. 1972, President Nixon formally signed a parliamentary resolution to establish Father's Day. This festival was finally confirmed in the form of law and has been used ever since.

The second statement:

The idea of a day to commemorate mother was first put forward in the United States in 1907. Two years later, a woman in Washington State, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, suggested that there should be a day similar to Mother's Day to pay tribute to her father. Mrs. Dodd lost her mother when she was young and was brought up by her father. She loves her father very much.

In the same year that Mrs Dodd put forward her idea (1909), the governor of Washington responded by declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. This idea was officially approved by President Wood Wilson in 1996. 1924, President John Calvin Coolidge suggested making Father's Day a national holiday, so as to "establish a closer relationship between fathers and children and remind fathers of all their responsibilities". Red roses or white roses are considered as Father's Day flowers.

Father's Day is established as a holiday throughout the United States, which is longer than Mother's Day. Because the idea of establishing Father's Day is very popular, businessmen and manufacturers are beginning to see business opportunities. They not only encourage children to send greeting cards to their fathers, but also encourage them to buy small gifts such as ties and socks to show their respect for their fathers.

During World War II, American soldiers stationed in Britain asked to send Father's Day cards back to China. The American soldier's request was answered by the British greeting card publisher, and the greeting card was printed. Although the British public's acceptance of this artificial festival has been low, nowadays, British people celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday in June, which is similar to the way in the United States.

Father's Day seems far less important than Mother's Day. No children give gifts to their fathers. However, American fathers still think their fate is much stronger than that of fathers in many other countries, because fathers in those countries don't even have a nominal holiday.

People have always had different views on the origin of birthday culture. As early as the pre-Qin "Book of Rites Internal Rules", it was recorded: "Zisheng: Men set the left arc of the door and women set it? On the right side of the door. " The "arc" here refers to the bow, "?" Refers to the handkerchief worn on the body, meaning that when the child is born, if it is a boy, a bow will be hung on the left side of the door, and if it is a girl, a handkerchief will be hung on the right side of the door. Since then, every year on this day, people have to hold a banquet to celebrate, usually called "birthday". So, why are people alive?

The first statement: Celebrate the continuation and prosperity of life.

In Hanshu? "Biography of Lu Wan" recorded such a thing: "I fell in love with Gaozu (Liu Bang) and Wanzhuang, studied books and fell in love with each other. Li Zhongjia's two families love each other, have children on the same day, and care for each other to celebrate mutton wine. " Later generations analyzed that Lu Wan's father and Liu Bang's father lived in the same room, which was regarded as the difference between life and death. Their wives gave birth to a baby boy on the same day. After learning the news, the villagers specially prepared gifts to congratulate them, and the date of "congratulations" is probably the first birthday anniversary of the two children, which is what we call birthdays. It can be seen that the custom of birthday was very popular in the late Qin Dynasty.

The second statement: thank your mother for giving life.

As the saying goes, "the child's birthday is a hard day for the mother." No matter how pregnant in October, every life comes into this world, and as a child's mother, she has to endure great physical and psychological pain. Therefore, there is a folk saying that the original meaning of birthday is "mourning for my parents who gave birth to me" and "toil" means toil and hardship. I hope to remember my mother's pain in labor and childbirth through her birthday and experience the hardships of her parents' feeding. In Sui Shu? In the Biography of Emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty, Emperor Wendi of Sui Dynasty once wrote a letter: "June 13th is my birthday, so it is advisable to make Emperor Wu Yuan and the queen of the sea be beheaded." The "Emperor Wu Yuan" and "Empress Yuan Ming" here are the biological parents Lu of Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty. On his birthday, Emperor Wendi of Sui asked the whole country to be vegetarian in memory of his parents. Coincidentally, in "Yan Jiaxun? It is also recorded in Wind Exercise that Emperor Liang Yuan's birthday in the Southern Dynasties was on the sixth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. On this day, he will set up a "fasting lecture" in the palace. It is worth noting that in the same article, it was also mentioned that in some areas of the south of the Yangtze River, birthdays were celebrated by wine. This move was denounced by the author as: "Those uneducated people, although lonely, spend their days eating, and their mouths are full of vocal music. "It can be seen that in northern China during the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, birthdays were mostly due to the Confucian concept of filial piety, mostly serious and formal ceremonies, full of sadness. According to historical records, after the Five Dynasties, Emperor Taizong and Emperor Gaozu couldn't hold on to their birthdays. Birthdays were more like a commemorative ceremony. However, the custom of celebrating birthdays every year has quietly become popular in some places in southern China.

The third statement: eliminate disasters and exorcise evil spirits.

This statement originated from a folklore: there was a teenager with a poor family and only an old mother in her seventies. Once, the teenager suddenly got an unknown serious illness, and the family had no money to treat him. When he was dying, someone told him a way that the Eight Immortals would pass by one day and they could prepare drinks for their help. The boy followed the plan, so he saw the Eight Immortals and cured the strange disease. When he left, the Eight Immortals told him, "Today is the day of your rebirth. Celebrate it every year and you will live a long life. " After the news spread, buying wine for a living gradually became the custom of local guests, and it also spread. Although this is a legend, it can also be seen that birthdays have the meaning of eliminating disasters and diseases in many people's hearts and praying for peace in the coming year.
