City in southwestern Germany. The Bryceland is located between the Upper Rhine River and the Black Forest Mountains. Population: 187,000 (1982). In the twelfth century it was a free trade city. It developed rapidly after World War II and became the cultural and economic center and timber distribution center of the Black Forest Mountains. Industry includes scientific instrument manufacturing, printing, electronics, chemistry, textiles, furniture and other sectors. Railway hubs and airports. The picturesque scenery on the edge of the Black Forest attracts a large number of vacationers and tourists. There is a university built in the fifteenth century.
