What color clothes do Romans wear?
Nobles and rich people wear white, black, red or purple.
Blue is the color of working-class clothes.
Brown tunics are only worn by the lower classes, mourners or defendants.
In movies, historical reconstruction and illustrations, Roman legion soldiers wear red robes.
First of all, ancient Rome lasted a long time. In the centuries when the Roman Empire was the main participant, fashion was bound to change hundreds of times. The resources we have provided us with many examples for reference, but it is a bit risky to use them to accurately explain the general trend. You can compare 100 random cars found in the barn with the cars we tried to infer before World War II-how do you know whether they represent any cars except those placed in the barn (so they survived our research and made them look representative)?
However, this is my view on popular theory:-)
They wear clothes of all colors, but not all colors are equally expensive. Generally speaking, earth tones such as brown, red and yellow are easy to make, so poorer people may use clothes of these colors, even undyed wool or linen. Blue and green are more expensive, and purple is ridiculously expensive. Pure white is also quite expensive, and it is made by washing old urine (containing ammonia IIRC) repeatedly.
Purple is limited to some higher-level officials, the most obvious being the emperor (* * * and the consul of China). Generally speaking, the more purple you wear, the higher your grade. These two senior ranks are literally called "laticlavii" and "angusticlavii", which refer to the width of the purple vertical stripes they wear on their robes.
Pompeii's murals give us a good indication, but please remember that these people are rich and they can afford expensive colors, which does not represent ordinary Roman citizens.
Almost every research article I found is about ordinary people, non-soldiers, * * *, and nobles. They wear clothes of all colors and shades. Red is usually worn by members of the army and the Senate, purple is worn by nobles, and the deepest color is reserved for the emperor.
1) red. In ancient Rome, the red flag symbolized war or battle. According to ancient Roman mythology, red also represents Mars, the god of war. This color was even used by the Romans to make up, especially by women to color their lips.
2) blue. This color represents the uniform worn by civil servants. Blue is obtained by extracting dyes from indigo and wood.
3) black. In ancient Rome, black symbolizes mourning or sadness.
4) purple. In ancient Rome, purple was associated with kingship, power and wealth. Only nobles wear clothes dyed in this color. In Roman color symbols, purple is also called Tyr purple or Imperial purple. The ancient Romans got this color by extracting dyes from plants.
5) green. Green was used by the Romans as eye makeup. During the Roman Empire, green was regarded as a symbol of beauty, love and fertility. It is also considered as a symbol of the goddess Venus. In ancient Rome, * * * also wore green clothes.
6) yellow. In ancient Rome, people wore yellow clothes at weddings. This is a very popular color, and all brides wear it.
7) Indigo. Indigo is related to royalty like purple. The colon comes from plants. Indigo dyes are obtained through systematic procedures. According to the symbolic meaning of Roman color, the first process involves fermentation. The second stage of filtration, and finally keep dry. After the last step, the dye is dried into blocks.
8) white. The ancient Romans basically used white as a part of their clothing. The Romans wore white clothes, which were called wide robes. These robes are made of white wool. White marble was used as the floor of Roman houses.
White is also used to make statues or to build churches, palaces and other buildings. It is also well known to use white products as cosmetics.
9) orange. Like yellow, orange is also related to weddings in ancient Rome. The bride wears an orange or yellow veil.
