Guangzhou Shamian Honglou Information

The national sand surface is located on the White Swan Lake in the Pearl River Delta, covering an area of 330 mu. After the outbreak of the Second Opium War, in the ninth year of Xianfeng (A.D. 1859), the British and French invaders forced the Governor-General of Guangdong and Guangxi to rent sand noodles, hire employees to repair river embankments, fill the soil and build foundations, and form a sand surface island. Britain and France set up consulates on the island. From the end of 19 to the beginning of the 20th century, the public facilities in Shamian Concession were basically complete. These buildings mainly include consulates, churches, banks, post offices, telegraph offices, shops, hospitals, hotels and main residences, as well as clubs, bars, tennis courts and swimming pools. Most of their residents are consulates and banks from various countries.

There are more than 150 European-style buildings on Shamian Island, including 42 characteristic buildings with neo-Baroque style, imitation Gothic style, coupon gallery style, neoclassical style and combination of Chinese and Western styles, which is the most exotic European-style building in Guangzhou. The building located at No.2-6 Shamian Street, commonly known as the Red House, was originally a club for foreign customs personnel and China nationals. It is three stories high, made of red bricks, with pointed attics in the north and south, imitating the British romantic architectural style of19th century. The building located at No.54 Shamian Street, formerly HSBC, is four stories high. The outer wall of the second floor is built with columns to the third floor, and the southwest building has a dome pavilion. The building located at No.48 Shamian Street is the most representative building, with a three-story reinforced concrete structure. The surrounding corridors are arched, and the outer walls are painted with washed stone meters. Shamian Street 14 Church of Our Lady of Luther is small in scale and simple in structure, but its entrance is still Gothic.

After the establishment of People's Republic of China (PRC), the municipal government set up a special organization to manage it.

The building complex was approved by the Ministry of Construction, National Cultural Heritage Administration and China Architectural Society in 1990, and was announced as an excellent building unit in modern China. 1996 the State Council was declared as a national key cultural relics protection unit.
