Suining is located in the middle of Sichuan Basin and the middle reaches of Fujiang River, with Chongqing, Guang 'an and Nanchong in the east, Chengdu in the west, Neijiang and Ziyang in the south and Deyang and Mianyang in the north. Located in the main axis of urbanization development in Sichuan, it is one of the "six metropolitan areas" strategically deployed and constructed in Sichuan Province and an important part of Chengdu Economic Circle and Chengdu Plain Urban Agglomeration.

Suining has a long history and rich humanities. Suining was founded on 1985. As a place name, it began after Huan Wen Pingshu, a general in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, which meant to calm the war and achieve peace. It has nurtured a number of outstanding talents such as Chen Ziang, Wang Zhuo, Huang Li, Zhang Peng 'ao and Zhang Wentao, and has the reputation of "an important town in the middle of Sichuan" and "a state of literary talents".
