The plot synopsis of the extra man

Although his "career" was going smoothly, Ives' life was far from satisfactory - or, in other words, beyond his imagination. He rents a shabby apartment owned by Henry Harrison (played by Kevin Kline) and lives with Harrison. Harrison was an eccentric, penniless, but brilliant playwright. From time to time, Henry would sing some operettas, listen to some music that others had never heard of, and dance some weird dances. This relationship and Harrison's philosophy and attitude were pie in the sky for Ives, who wanted to develop his writing career in New York.
