Historical Evolution of Xichun Town

Gaochun old street, known as the first ancient street in Jinling, is located on the border of southern Jiangsu, bordering Anhui, Gucheng Lake in the southeast and Shijiu Lake in the north, and is known as the "Holy Land in the South of the Yangtze River". Xichun Town has a long history. As early as the Shang Dynasty, there were human activities. Ancestors settled down according to the terrain and gradually formed villages and market towns. In the fourth year of Hongzhi in Ming Dynasty (A.D. 149 1), Gaochun County was established. In the thirty-fourth year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1908), it was renamed Huanxi Town and later Xichun Town (1945). Now the whole town covers an area of 82.6 square kilometers with a population of 1 10000.

Xichun Ancient Town is located in the west of Gaochun District, Nanjing, bordering Gucheng Lake in the east and south, and is the resident of Gaochun District People's Government. The settlement is inverted trapezoid, wide in the north and wide in the south. The ancient name came to Huizhou, and it was called Gaochun Town in the Song Dynasty. According to legend, it was named after the simple local folk customs and high terrain. Gaochun County belonged to Lishui County before its establishment. In the fourth year of Hongzhi in Ming Dynasty (149 1), Gaochun County was separated from Lishui County, and Gaochun Town was the county administration, named after the town. In order to avoid the confusion of the names of counties and towns, Xichun Town was later called "Xichun Town because it is located in the highland on the north bank of Xichun River". In the thirty-fourth year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1908), it was once named Binxi Town. During the Republic of China, from 65438 to 0934, Xichun Town was divided into three towns: Xichun, Chunhua and Chun 'an. 1945, the Japanese Puppet Army changed to Chundong and Xichun Town. 1946, the county government of the Republic of China merged Chundong and Xichun into one town, still called Xichun Town.

Historically, the town has been a county town with many shops, criss-crossing streets and bustling streets. Xichun Town has developed industry and commerce and handicraft industry. It is an economic corridor connecting southern Jiangsu and southern Anhui. As early as the Tang Dynasty, there was a commercial bud, and there was a description in Tang poetry that "Jia Ke returned from the sky and set sail among the clouds". During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the rise of Huizhou merchants, it became the main distribution center of Anhui grain, tea, tobacco leaves, paper, bamboo and wood, tung oil, Jiangsu colored cloth, silks and satins, daily necessities and other materials, creating the famous "eight big banks" in history. The old town of Xichun has been built into a historical and cultural block, which highlights the style of the ancient town. Places of interest include the earliest Neolithic Xuecheng site in Nanjing, Baosheng Temple Tower in Wu Dong period and Jinhu Bridge in Ming Dynasty. There are many shops in Xichun Old Street (Zhongshan Road) formed in Ming and Qing Dynasties, which combines the styles of Xiangshan School in southern Jiangsu and Huizhou School in southern Anhui, and is known as "the first ancient street in Jinling". There are also temples, Gaochun Folk Museum, Gujing, Wu Ancestral Hall (now the former site of the headquarters of the first detachment of the New Fourth Army) and other scenic spots along the street, which show the quaint ancient architecture art and its rich folk culture. The local folk song and dance art is well known.
