Why is Xiamen English Amoy?

According to textual research, Xiamen is a transliteration of Minnan dialect. As early as the end of15th century and the beginning of16th century, the Portuguese called Jinmen and Xiamen in Minnan dialect, and these terms spread and were adopted by later colonial countries such as the Netherlands, France and Britain.

It is reported that the library of Harvard University in the United States has collected two ancient maps for the navigation of ships in East India, and recorded the routes passing through Xiamen and Jinmen in detail. The Columbia Encyclopedia published by Columbia University in the United States also includes the words Jinmen and Xiamen.

Xiamen city introduction

Xiamen is located in the east of China, in the southeast of Fujian Province, between 24 23'-24 54' north latitude and117 53'-18 26' east longitude, with a mild and rainy climate.

It consists of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island, Haicang Peninsula on the west coast, Jimei Peninsula on the north coast, Xiang 'an Peninsula on the east coast, Dalong Island, Xiaodeng Island, Tongan and Jiulong River inland. Xiamen dialect is a dialect in southern Fujian, and together with Zhangzhou and Quanzhou, it is an integral part of Minnan dialect.
